JOB DESCRIPTION
Under general supervision, ensures the general public has a safe environment in which to work, shop, live, and visit through inspection of local businesses and education of the public in fire safe practices.
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
Requires a high school diploma or GED, possession of a State of Florida Fire Safety Inspector 1 Certification, State of Florida Fire and Life Safety Educator Certification, and State of Florida Fire Safety Inspector 2 Certification within two years; fire prevention and/or fire inspection experience is desirable; capable of responding to a fire incident “call out” within 30 minutes, as prescribed by department operation procedures. Must be able to wear a filter style mask and air purifying respirator as prescribed by OSHA. Occasionally climbs a ladder and/or walks through unstable structures while conducting inspections. Requires flexibility in hours and days of work and work locations due to frequent meetings and activities outside normal work hours. Work involves a minimum of physical effort most days, however may be standing or walking extensively during special events. Must have the ability to occasionally and at times repetitively, bend/stoop, kneel, climb, pull/push, reach, and lift/carry objects up to 30 pounds. Requires a valid Florida drivers license.
EXAMPLES OF TASKS
Conducts inspection of existing businesses and new construction to verify compliance with fire safety regulations; researches questions posed by the general public or by contractors regarding matters of fire safety; creates and reviews pre-plans on an annual basis to ensure they are accurate with the most current information; reviews construction plans to ensure all required fire safety equipment is provided; attends meetings dealing with a variety of topics including pre-construction, intelligence, and current fire safety and education topics; teaches various classes on multiple fire department subjects; presents public education programs in a variety of fire department related areas. Produces various written documents including fire reports, inspection reports, and general correspondence; assists in fire investigations; responds to complaints from the general public; uses a hydrocarbon detector and camera for documentation purposes; maintains proficiency in the wear and use of filter style mask and air purifying respirators.
