General Statement of Position:

The Township of Montgomery is seeking a full-time Fire Inspector to work in the Construction/Code/Fire Prevention office 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday. This position is responsible for enforcement of the New Jersey Uniform Fire Code through required inspections. This position will ensure buildings are in accordance with appropriate laws, codes, ordinances, regulations and standards Starting salary for this full-time position is $65,704.00 per year as per Union contract. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Inspect various occupancies to ensure compliance with the New Jersey Uniform Fire Code
  • Conduct fire investigations in accordance with the NJ UFC and
NFPA 921
  • Write clear and concise inspection and investigation reports
  • Perform fire prevention details as directed by the Township Fire Marshal
  • Interfaces with co-workers and superiors on technical and administrative matters
  • Deliver fire safety presentations to various civic and educational groups
  • Respond to complaints from the public
  • Assist with phone and walk-in requests for fire prevention inspections or questions related to fire prevention
  • Attend Fire Prevention meetings at the discretion of the Fire Marshal
  • Respond to emergency calls as directed by Departmental SOP
  • Operate a township issued Emergency Response Vehicle
  • Maintain any township issued equipment (portable radio, 4 gas meter, etc.

Required Key Technical Skills & Knowledge:
  • Ability to read, understand, and interpret the NJ UFC
  • Ability to maintain records and files;

  • Ability to explain to the general public how the NJ UFC is to be applied to their situation
  • Ability to explain code deficiencies and guide the public in obtaining compliance

  • UCC Fire Prevention Licenses Required Education, Certification, License:
  • High School Diploma
  • Valid NJ Fire Inspector Certification
  • NJ Firefighter 1 Certification
  • IML Level 1

  • IML Level 3
  • NJ DCJ Arson Investigator
  • IAAI recognized Fire Investigator Certification

Physical Requirements:
  • Able to successfully perform fire inspections and other related emergency service duties
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, talk or hear, use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools or controls and reach with hands and arms;
  • The employee is occasionally required to sit, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate computers and various pieces of office equipment;
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus;
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
Additional Requirements:
  • Effective 9/1/11, all employees of State and local government must reside in the State of NJ, unless exempted.
  • Must have a valid NJ Driver’s License.
