Engineer 2025 3.8 3.8 out of 5 stars Seminole County, FL Description Technical work involving the responsibility for the protection of life and property by driving fire apparatus, operating pumps and implementing fire suppression techniques. Does related work as required. Employees promoted from the rank of Firefighter to Engineer will be brought to the minimum pay for the rank of Engineer (as defined each Fiscal Year in the A Unit Contract) or receive a 5% increase added to their base pay, whichever is greater, upon their promotion.

Essential Functions Note :

These are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position. Responds to fire, rescue, and medical alarms in an assigned area as a member of a fire company. Performs firefighting activities, including, but not limited to, safely driving apparatus, operating pumps, and related equipment. Operates and maintains Fire vehicles and equipment. Administers Basic Life Support and emergency medical assistance to injured or afflicted persons. Determines the appropriate water pressures required, during pumping operations, according to type of hose layout and other conditions. Locate firefighting apparatus in a position consistent with tactical considerations on an emergency scene, exercising care to avoid blocking the street to other apparatus. Connects hose or apparatus to hydrants or pumps, joins hose sections, connects nozzles, and operates nozzles in spraying water on fire. Ventilates burning buildings. Operates hand fire extinguisher and similar equipment. Raises, climbs, and lowers ladders. Performs salvage operations. Drives emergency fire apparatus in responding to fire and rescue alarms. Operates pumps to maintain adequate water volume and pressure. Responsible for advanced knowledge of response areas. Responds to alarms, safely drives assigned apparatus to and from required locations. Ensures all daily, weekly, and monthly apparatus and equipment inspection, test records and logs are properly filled out and submitted per policy. Performs routine maintenance inspections of apparatus and completes vehicle repair request forms, as necessary. Participates in pre-planning with an emphasis on water supply, vehicle access, power lines, and fire department connections. Participates in conducting training and instruction programs by individual technical study and attendance at scheduled drills and classes. Supervises firefighters in the absence of a company officer.

Additional Duties :

Ability to analyze situations quickly and objectively and to determine the proper course of action. Ability to react quickly and calmly under emergency conditions. Ability to perform physically demanding duties such as carrying victims, hoisting equipment, using heavy equipment to force entry into or ventilate structures, use of hand and mechanical tools to extricate patients of automobile accidents. Detailed knowledge of firefighting techniques, procedures and mechanics as applied to fire suppression. Detailed knowledge of emergency medical services and patient care techniques. Possession of mechanical aptitude. Manipulative skills and hand-eye coordination are required in the operation of vehicles. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by the work. Ability to climb ladders and work at considerable heights. Ability to understand and execute complex oral and written instructions quickly. Must be able to read, write and speak the English language in an understandable manner. Communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing. Ability to perform limited mechanical work involved in maintaining firefighting and rescue apparatus, equipment, and tools. Ability to work as part of a team and to exercise independent judgement as required. Ability to cope with stressful situations firmly, courteously, and tactfully and with respect for the rights of others. Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide all units of measure. Minimum Qualifications Must be a Seminole County Fire Department member for a minimum of 3 years. Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Class E Driver’s License. Must possess and maintain Florida EMT/Paramedic certification. Must have completed a State of Florida pump operator’s course which meets the requirements of the Seminole County Fire Department. Must be able to express or exchange ideas by spoken word or perceiving sound by ear. Must have good eye sight utilizing prescribed eye glasses/contact lenses at all times for safety of self and others. Physical agility is required in climbing, bending and reaching. Requires continuous standing and/or walking to carry out duties. Requires occasional walking at a fast pace and/or running may be required. Must maintain a clean driving record in accordance with Seminole County and Seminole County Fire Department policies to continue driving an apparatus.
