STATEMENT OF JOB

This classification will prevent, suppress, and extinguish fires, provide emergency medical treatment, and perform other related firefighting activities.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Essential Functions:

Respond to emergency calls for fire suppression, medical assistance, hazardous materials incidents, motor vehicle accidents, natural disasters, explosions, bomb threats, downed power lines, and other emergency situations. Respond to instructions from dispatcher. Contact appropriate related agencies as needed. Drive, operate, and monitor a variety of fire and emergency vehicles/apparatus. Determine the best route to reach the location of emergency scenes. Perform safe driving functions in various weather conditions. Transport crew and equipment to emergency scenes. Position apparatus and equipment for optimal use of equipment and hose. Provide protection of life and property. Suppress, control, and extinguish fires. Perform search, rescue, extrication of victims, and forcible entries. Assist individuals from burning structures. Establish openings in buildings for entrance, ventilation, or salvage. Ventilate smoke and gas from buildings. Perform salvage operations such as throwing salvage covers, sweeping water, and removing debris. Assist with cleanup activities. Exercise control of emergency situations until relieved by a superior officer. Respond to medical calls, providing basic life support treatment to patients as well as transportation to appropriate medical facilities. Assess the physical condition of patients and assist in making decisions regarding proper courses of action. Perform duties such as CPR, Automatic External Defibrillator, splint applications, wound treatment, control of bleeding, shock prevention, monitoring and relaying of vital signs, oxygen administration, spine stabilization, IV therapy, etc. Perform extrication of victims from wreckage, as necessary. Maintain a state of readiness/preparation for emergency response. Check/maintain stock of equipment and supplies on fire vehicles and in fire stations. Re-load equipment and apparatus following response to emergency calls. Assist in preparing apparatus for subsequent emergencies and in testing personal equipment, hoses/pumps, and other tools and apparatuses. Ensure the emergency medical service equipment is properly stocked and operational. Maintain a comprehensive, current knowledge and awareness of applicable laws, regulations, policies, and procedures. Maintain awareness of new equipment, procedures, trends, and advances in the profession. Participate in and assist in conducting physical fitness training, training drills, and other continuing education activities. Attend shift meetings, workshops, and seminars as appropriate. Participate in fire prevention, pre-fire planning, and other fire education activities. Conduct fire safety programs, apparatus displays, and skills demonstrations. Conduct tours of fire stations and fire trucks. Conduct safety inspections at schools and businesses. Inspect hoses and hydrants. Participate in community events and fundraisers. Perform general maintenance tasks necessary to keep vehicles, buildings, quarters, apparatus, equipment, and tools in operable condition, which may include inspecting/testing equipment, replacing fluids, greasing equipment, replacing parts, washing/cleaning equipment, cleaning quarters, or grounds maintenance. Monitor equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety. Report faulty equipment for necessary maintenance work. Process a variety of documentation associated with department/division operations, within designated timeframes, and per established procedures. Receive and review various documentation, including email, memos, patient care reports, and standard operating procedures. Review, complete, process, forward, or retain as appropriate. Prepare or complete various forms, reports, correspondence, and other documentation, including maintenance forms, timesheets, and patient refusal forms. Compile data for further processing or for use in preparation of department reports. Maintain computerized and/or hardcopy records. Operate or use various equipment, power tools, hand tools, and supplies to complete work assignments. Operate and maintain fire apparatus, hose lines, extrication tools, radios, lawn equipment, and other power or motorized equipment. Operate a personal computer to enter, retrieve, review, modify data, utilize word processing, spreadsheet, Internet, e-mail, or other software. Operate a general office or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions. Communicate with supervisors, other employees, law enforcement, hospital personnel, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems. Drive the assigned apparatus. Annotate and order any materials needed for proper operation. Perform the detailed and regulated daily/weekly checkoffs. Act as subject matter expert as it pertains to the equipment stocked on the apparatus. Assist the Company Officer in the leadership of the company while on scene and during company training, Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND TRAINING

At least eighteen (18) years of age. High School diploma is required. Three (3) years of experience in certified firefighting Certification as an EMT-B Must acquire, possess, and maintain a valid Georgia driver’s license with Class E/F endorsement(s), State of Georgia Firefighting certification, Fire Apparatus Emergency Operation Course, Practical service fire ground hydraulics, Fire Apparatus Pumping Operations, NPQ or IFSAC Hazardous Materials Awareness/Operations, NPQ I, NPQ II or IFSAC Firefighter II Certification. The Georgia Firefighter Standards and Training Council shall be the final authority with respect to authorizing employment and certification of a person who has been convicted of a felony more than five (5) years but less than ten (10) years prior to seeking employment as a firefighter for any municipal, county, or state fire department which employs three (3) or more firefighters who work a minimum of 40 hours per week and has the responsibility of preventing and suppressing fires, protecting life and property, and enforcing municipal, county, and state codes, as well as enforcing any law pertaining to the prevention and control of fires.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND STANDARDS REQUIRED
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Ability to demonstrate proficiency in the performance of the essential functions and learn, comprehend, and apply all city or departmental policies, practices, and procedures necessary to function effectively in the position. Ability to maintain compliance with a minimum of 24 hours of training annually. Ability to sustain compliance with department training requirements. Ability to complete other training as required to perform other assigned duties.

Physical Requirements:

This position classifies the physical exertion requirements as heavy physical effort in heavy work, with greater emphasis on climbing and balancing, but typically also involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds); may occasionally involve heavier objects and materials (up to 150 pounds). Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, odor, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally. Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, smoke, temperature and noise extremes, hazardous materials, fire, unsafe structures, heights, confined spaces, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, bright/dim lights, toxic agents, animal/wildlife attacks, animal/human bites, explosives, firearms, water hazards, violence, disease, pathogenic substances, or rude/irate customers.
