Firefighter/EMT 4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 250 Main Street, Southwest Harbor, ME 04679 Purpose This position description is established by the Southwest Harbor Fire Department (“Department”) to outline the basic requirements, duties, and general responsibilities of the Full-Time Firefighter/EMT position. A Full-Time Firefighter/EMT is responsible for fire suppression, emergency medical services, technical rescue, hazardous materials response, and other emergency and non-emergency duties necessary to protect life and property. This role requires the ability to perform physically demanding tasks in high-stress and hazardous environments while working as part of a professional firefighting team. In addition to emergency response, Full-Time Firefighters are expected to complete daily operational tasks , including apparatus and equipment checks, station maintenance, and training activities .

Definitions Full-Time Member/Employee:

Any person working a scheduled 40-hour workweek and receiving full town benefits .

Per Diem Member/Employee:

Any person assigned a scheduled set of hours per week but who does not meet the definition of full-time employment.

Paid-On-Call Member/Employee:

Any active member who responds to emergencies on an as-needed basis and receives compensation for time worked .

Team Members:

Any members of a group of two or more firefighters who work together at an emergency incident or training activity.

Immediate Supervisor:

The person immediately superior to an employee who directs and supervises their work. Immediate Supervisor Full-Time Firefighters report to the any fire Officer (Lieutenant or Captain) and work under the general direction of the Deputy Fire Chief and Fire Chief . Essential Duties and Responsibilities The primary duties and responsibilities of the Full-Time Firefighter/EMT include, but are not limited to: Emergency Response & Fire Suppression Respond to fires, medical emergencies, hazardous materials incidents, rescues, and other emergency calls as assigned. Rotate between Engine, Ladder, or Rescue company assignments as required by the Fire Chief or Deputy Fire Chief. Perform fire suppression activities , including fire attack, ventilation, salvage, and overhaul. Conduct search and rescue operations to locate and remove victims from hazardous environments. Operate fire hoses, hydrants, ladders, and hand/powered tools in fire suppression and rescue operations. Identify and properly respond to hazardous materials incidents at an operations level. Emergency Medical Services & Rescue Operations Provide basic life support (BLS) and first aid within the scope of an EMT-B license or higher . Assist in the extrication of victims from vehicles, structures, and confined spaces . Perform water, rope, and technical rescue operations as trained and authorized. Daily Station & Equipment Responsibilities Complete daily apparatus and equipment checks , ensuring all firefighting and EMS equipment is fully operational . Conduct routine maintenance and inspections of station facilities and department resources. Maintain cleanliness and organization of apparatus bays, living quarters, and common areas. Assist with restocking and inventory management of fire and EMS supplies. Ensure proper care, maintenance, and readiness of department vehicles and equipment. Training & Professional Development Attend and participate in scheduled training sessions, department meetings, and skill demonstrations . Maintain up-to-date training certifications and complete annual recertifications as required. Stay current with firefighting tactics, EMS procedures, and rescue techniques . Assist in instructing or coordinating department training activities as assigned. Public Relations & Community Outreach Support department efforts in fire prevention, public education, and safety programs . Represent the department in a professional and courteous manner at all times. Assist in coordinating and participating in community outreach events and educational programs . Mandatory Qualifications and Requirements Education & Licensing Be at least 18 years old . Possess a high school diploma or GED . Possess and maintain a valid State of Maine driver’s license with an acceptable driving record. Fire & EMS Certifications Possess and maintain Firefighter I & II certifications . Possess and maintain Maine EVOC certification or a CDL license . Obtain and maintain an EMT-B or higher license within one year of hire . Possess and maintain CPR certification . Obtain and maintain Hazardous Materials Operations Level Certification within one year of hire .

Complete annual recertification training for:

Violence in the Workplace Prevention Sexual Harassment Prevention Complete National Incident Management System (NIMS) training , including:

IS-700 ICS-100

Successfully complete the SWHFD training and orientation program . Comply with all department SOPs and SOGs . Pass a 6-month and 12-month performance evaluation conducted by the Fire Chief and Town Manager . Firefighter/EMT Orientation Program The Firefighter/EMT Orientation Program ensures that all new firefighters gain a solid foundation in fire service operations, EMS procedures, and department policies . All new full-time firefighters must complete the following orientation requirements: Review all SWHFD Standard Operating Guidelines (SOGs) and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) . Familiarize with all SWHFD apparatus and equipment , following clearance policies and documentation procedures. Review Southwest Harbor’s target hazards and key infrastructures . Demonstrate a working knowledge of EMS and medical emergency operations . Tour all Southwest Harbor municipal buildings and town departments . Desired Qualifications The following qualifications are preferred but not required : Pump Operator 1 or equivalent certification . Fire Instructor I & II certifications . Maine A-EMT or Paramedic (EMT-P) certification . Wildland firefighting training and experience . Haz-Mat Technician certification . Water Rescue certifications . Fire Officer I & II certifications . Working Environment & Physical Requirements Full-Time Firefighters work in a variety of settings and conditions , including: Extreme temperatures ( below 0°F and above 100°F ). Hazardous conditions , such as smoke, gases, chemicals, and unstable structures. Physically demanding tasks , including lifting over 150 pounds occasionally and 60 pounds frequently . Frequent movement , including standing, walking, kneeling, climbing, and crawling. High-stress situations , requiring rapid decision-making and situational awareness. Special Tools & Equipment Full-Time Firefighters must be proficient in the use of: Fire apparatus and emergency vehicles . Firefighting equipment , including SCBAs, hoses, ladders, and pumps. Rescue tools , such as hydraulic extrication equipment, saws, and stabilization devices. Computers, radios, and communication devices .
