06/24/2025 4:00 PM General Statement of Duties The Firefighter/EMT-Basic is a vital entry-level position within the Oak Island Fire Department, responsible for performing firefighting duties, providing basic emergency medical care, and participating in other emergency and non-emergency activities. Under the direct supervision of a Fire Officer, the incumbent responds to fire alarms, medical emergencies, rescue incidents, hazardous materials incidents at the awareness level, and other calls for assistance. This position requires a dedicated individual with a strong work ethic, commitment to teamwork, and a desire to serve the community. The Firefighter/EMT-Basic must be able to perform physically demanding tasks, follow instructions, and maintain a high level of readiness. Distinguishing Features of the Class This is the entry-level operational position in the Fire Department. Incumbents are expected to develop their skills and knowledge through on-the-job training and formal education. Progression to higher ranks and more advanced medical certifications is expected with experience and demonstrated proficiency.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities Emergency Response:
Respond promptly and safely to fire alarms, medical emergencies, rescue incidents, and other calls for service as directed. Perform fire suppression duties, including hose deployment, nozzle operation, ladder placement, ventilation, and search and rescue operations. Provide basic life support (BLS) emergency medical care to sick or injured individuals according to established protocols and their EMT-Basic certification. This includes patient assessment, airway management, CPR, bandaging, splinting, and other basic interventions. Operate and maintain fire apparatus, equipment, and tools in a safe and efficient manner. Participate in technical rescue operations as trained and directed. Assist with hazardous materials incidents at the awareness level, following established safety procedures. Operate communication equipment effectively.
Station and Equipment Maintenance:
Participate in the daily maintenance and cleaning of fire stations, apparatus, equipment, and tools to ensure operational readiness. Perform routine checks of equipment and report any deficiencies or needed repairs. Assist with inventory and stocking of supplies and equipment.
Training and Development:
Participate actively in all required training drills and exercises, including fire suppression, EMS, technical rescue, and other related topics. Maintain current certifications and licenses as required. Continuously strive to improve skills and knowledge related to fire service and emergency medical care. Participate in continuing education programs.
Public Education and Community Relations:
Participate in fire prevention and public education activities as assigned. Interact with the public in a professional and courteous manner. Represent the Fire Department positively in the community.
Administrative Functions:
Prepare and submit basic reports as required. Follow departmental policies, procedures, rules, and regulations. Maintain accurate records of activities and equipment checks. Perform other duties as assigned by a Fire Officer. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Basic knowledge of fire suppression principles and techniques. Basic knowledge of emergency medical care principles and practices at the EMT-Basic level. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Ability to work effectively as part of a team. Ability to perform physically demanding tasks in adverse conditions. Ability to operate and maintain basic firefighting and EMS equipment. Ability to communicate effectively with colleagues and the public. Ability to remain calm and function effectively in stressful situations. Basic computer skills. Commitment to safety and adherence to safety regulations. Strong work ethic and a desire to serve the community. Desired Qualifications, Certifications, and Experience High school diploma or equivalent. No prior professional firefighting experience is required, but related experience (e.g., volunteer fire service, EMS) may be beneficial. North Carolina Firefighter I Certification (may be required within a specified timeframe after hire). North Carolina Hazardous Materials Responder Level I North Carolina EMT-Basic Certification (or National Registry EMT-Basic). NC Driver’s License (Class B or higher) with a safe driving record. CPR Certification. Physical Requirements This position requires the ability to perform physically demanding tasks under adverse conditions, including exposure to heat, cold, smoke, confined spaces, and heights. Must be able to lift, carry, and move heavy objects. Requires the ability to wear and use self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) and other personal protective equipment. Must possess sufficient physical agility, strength, and endurance to perform the essential functions of the job. Vision and hearing must be sufficient to perform duties effectively. Working Conditions Work involves exposure to hazardous conditions, including fire, smoke, hazardous materials, and medical emergencies.
