Annual Pay Range:

$42,000 to $70,918 Reports to Fire Lieutenant Direct Reports This position does not supervise other positions PURPOSE This position is responsible for the protection of life and property by combating, extinguishing and preventing fires. Work includes the use of fire and rescue equipment at the scene of emergencies. Employees are responsible for maintaining, inspecting and cleaning department vehicles and other associated equipment. Standards and procedures are established, however, independent judgment is required of the employee during emergency incidents. Duties occasionally involve strenuous exertion under hazardous conditions of extreme heat, smoke and confined spaces.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES FF/EMT TRAINEE

(Grade 18) Actively supports and upholds the department’s mission and values. Attends an orientation training designed to provide an overall of the Southern Pines Fire Department including knowledge of firefighting and medical procedures, tools and equipment, and physical fitness. Receives training to develop an awareness of the overall Fire Department functions, responsibilities of Firefighters and how they relate to field operations. Participate in training program and in on-the-job training activities; drill with engine company members; attend special instruction sessions in firefighting, rescue and emergency medical procedures and techniques. Learn the proper procedures for responding to fire incidents, including laying lines of hose, directing streams of water, carrying and setting up ladders and other equipment, including motorized equipment, ventilating buildings, performing rescue work and cleaning up after fires to limit water damage. Learn the proper procedures and techniques for rendering first aid and emergency medical assistance. Learn to clean and service firefighting apparatus and equipment, including motorized equipment; test and wash hose; and other equipment. Learn and follow all applicable safety procedures. Meet the criteria established by the department for acceptable performance at each step or level of training in order to progress to the next level. Participate in cleaning and maintaining facilities, grounds, equipment and apparatus; ensure that appropriate conditions are maintained at assigned facility; ensure that all equipment and apparatus is in a constant state of readiness for emergency calls Perform other related job duties and related job tasks as assigned by upper level supervisory staff.

FF/EMT I

(Grade 19) All duties above and the addition of: Respond to fire alarms with assigned company; lay and connect hose; hold nozzles and direct water streams; raise and climb ladders; ventilate burning structures; enter buildings to evacuate occupants. Operate all types of fire operation and rescue equipment including portable fire extinguishers, pike poles, hand lines, smoke ejectors, salvage covers, forcible entry tools, aerial ladder equipment and emergency medical equipment. Respond to emergency medical incidents; evaluate patient needs and administer proper emergency medical care until relieved by proper medical personnel Perform search and rescue of individuals in hazardous environments including collapsed buildings, auto accidents, hazardous material spills and confined spaces. Attend special instruction in firefighting emergency medical techniques; perform drills with other engine company staff; become familiar with district, established response routes and hydrant system; prepare and maintain a variety of firefighting preplan drawings and schematics. Provide public information on fire prevention, CPR and career opportunities. Use departmental computer equipment to input, review and access records, information and other various data. Drive fire apparatus and/or operate fire apparatus on emergency calls or at incident scene.

FF/EMT II

(Grade 20) All duties above and the addition of: Conduct fire suppression, technical rescue, and specialized training classes. Drive fire apparatus and/or operate fire apparatus on emergency calls or at incident scene. Master FF/EMT (Grade 21) All duties above and the addition of: Provides a comprehensive level of expertise in fire prevention, rescue, fire suppression, and a variety of other assigned duties associated with fire and rescue. Performs emergency operations and assistance with fires, entrapments, auto accidents, collapsed buildings, hazardous materials incidents, mass casualty incidents, and assists in rescues requiring special and technical skills; operates fire and rescue apparatus and equipment. Assists Company Officer / Driver Operator at the assigned station; Provides thorough mentoring through the preceptor program Performs routine clerical and administrative functions such as preparing reports and completing forms; performs work using computers and appropriate approved software; conducts training sessions for other firefighters and the public; assists in developing training programs and aids.

EDUCATION, SKILLS AND CERTIFICATIONS FF/EMT TRAINEE

(Grade 18) High School Diploma or GED required. Valid Drivers License with an excellent driving history. Ability to manipulate items (fine motor skills, assemble, disassemble, throw, catch, etc.). Ability to lift, carry and handle items (to include weight limits for “constantly”, “regularly”, and “occasionally” frequency). Ability to remain stationary for extended periods (sitting, standing, etc.). Must be able to successfully complete a physical aptitude test on an ??annual?? basis. Ability to perform above functions while wearing turnout uniform and associated gear. Must be able to wear and use a self-contained breathing apparatus.
