GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The Fire Engineer is responsible for providing fire protection, rescue operations, and emergency medical services. This role also involves operating and maintaining fire apparatus and related equipment in response to emergency and non-emergency incidents.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS

The essential functions/typical tasks listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. Participates in training on fire suppression, rescue operations, hazardous material, emergency medical skills, and emergency scene operations. Evaluates and performs emergency scene operations by extinguishing fires, providing medical care, driving fire apparatus, extricating victims, and effectively operating equipment and fire pump. Manages records of events by entering information from incidents into reporting programs and entering records of equipment checks and repair. Maintains equipment and station by conducting inspections and tests of equipment and cleaning station and grounds. May be required to function as company officer in the absence of captain. Provides community service by participating in school and fire safety programs, providing equipment demonstrations and apparatus tours, and educating and assisting the public. Receives and responds to fire alarms; drives firefighting apparatus and operates pump and other firefighting equipment at the fire scene; assumes command of the fire scene in the absence of a supervisor. Works with all firefighters on fire scenes. Assists with fire prevention programs. Performs preventive and corrective maintenance work on trucks and related firefighting equipment; performs routine maintenance duties in keeping the fire stations, the equipment, and the fire apparatus clean and orderly. Prepares necessary reports on activities. Performs firefighting and related duties as necessary. Other duties as assigned.

Requirements:
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Working knowledge of the operations and maintenance of firefighting equipment used by the fire department. Working knowledge of the geographic and street layout of the town. Working knowledge of modern firefighting methods including flammable liquids and structural firefighting principles, practices, and procedures. Working knowledge of radio operations and the ability to dispatch fire apparatus and other emergency vehicles when needed. Ability to understand and implement oral and written instructions. Ability to prepare written reports. Ability to perform heavy manual work for limited periods of time under adverse conditions. Ability to perform mathematical calculations to accurately calculate fire flows and required pump pressures.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. This position involves work requiring the employee to move and/or lift up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, reach, bend, grasp, talk, hear, taste, smell and lift. Sufficient visual acuity required in this job includes close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. An employee in this position will be exposed to indoor and outdoor environmental conditions throughout the year, including extreme heat and cold; subject to hazards including working near functioning machinery; subject to fumes, odors, gases, humid conditions, airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electric shock and vibration; subject to working in tight and enclosed spaces and required to wear self-contained breathing apparatus when necessary. An employee in this class could “reasonably anticipate” to face contact with blood and other potentially infectious materials as a result of performing their job duties. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, except during certain firefighting activities when the noise levels may be loud.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or GED equivalent. Must be able to read and write the English language.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Ability to successfully complete the NIMS course work applicable to the position within one year. Must possess a valid NC Class B driver’s license without a record of suspension or revocation in any State. Must possess a current NC or National Registry EMT Certificate. Must possess NC Firefighter Certification I & II. Must possess NC General Technical Rescue Certification. Must possess NC Driver Operator Pumps and Aerials certification. Must be of good moral character and of temperate.
