FIREFIGHTER/EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIAN OVERVIEW & PURPOSE

Iredell County is pleased to partner with NC Community Colleges and offer an Apprenticeship Job Opportunity as a Firefighter/Emergency Medical Technician with the Emergency Medical Services Department. During classroom training portion the position will follow the Community College schedule, working 40 hour day-shift work weeks.

You will be assigned to work a firefighter shift schedule based on department (VFD) with oversight from Emergency Medical Services (EMS).

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Responds to alarms and assists in the suppression of fires, including rescue, entry, ventilating, salvage work and first response in emergency situations. Provides basic life support services. Coordinates emergency care procedures with physicians Drives and/or operates various medical and fire apparatus. Assists with hazardous materials incidents. Assists in maintaining fire apparatus, equipment, cleaning fire station and grounds. Presents programs to the community on safety, medical and fire prevention topics. Prepares and maintains reports related to operations, training, and professional development.

Serves as EMT in charge on calls; as required, directs care and response, and provides patient care; as needed, directs work of assigned EMT’s and Advanced EMT’s; provides training and mentoring of newer employees. Director management and cardiopulmonary resuscitation; oxygen administration; hemorrhage control; treatment for shock; bandaging and dressing injuries and splinting of fractures and dislocations; treatment of injuries to various parts of the body; provision of basic life support for medical injuries, assisting in normal and abnormal childbirth, treatment of injuries and burns; lifting and moving patients for transfers to medical facilities, extrication of patients from confined areas, and other procedures within county protocols.
