Overtime Pay:
Up to 25% Duty locationimpacts pay rates; locality pay for federal law enforcement ishigher in some locations than others. And a fully trained BorderPatrol Agent may be eligible for up to an additional 25% of basepay per the BPA Pay Reform Act of 2014. This is a career ladderposition with a grade level progression of GS-11 to GS-12. You willbe eligible for a promotion to the next higher grade level (withoutre-applying) once you successfully complete 52 weeks in the lowergrade level. All Border Patrol Agents may select from an array offederal employment benefits that include health and insuranceplans, a generous annual and sick leave program, and participationin the Thrift Savings Plan, a retirement plan that is similar totraditional and

Duties and Responsibilities:
As a Border Patrol Agent (BPA), you will be part of our 60,000workforce that strives to protect the American people bysafeguarding our borders, deterring illicit activity, and enhancingthe nation’s economic prosperity. Being a Border Patrol Agent makesyou a valuable member of the Federal Law Enforcement Officer (LEO)profession.
Typical activities include:
- Detecting, preventing,and apprehending undocumented noncitizens and smugglers ofnoncitizens at or near the land borders by maintaining surveillancefrom covert positions.
- Responding to electronic sensor alarms;interpreting and following tracks, marks, and other physicalevidence; using infrared scopes during night operations.
- Responding to aircraft sighting and other anti-smuggling activitiesand performing farm and ranch checks, traffic checks, city patrols,and transportation checks.
- Patrolling the international boundaryand coastal waterways and using a variety of government assets toaccomplish the USBP mission. Assets may include, but are notlimited to, motor vehicles, horses, watercraft, off-road vehicles,ATVs, snowmobiles, and motorcycles.
- Occasional travel may berequired based on operational needs.
Qualifications:
If you haveprevious or current law enforcement or military law enforcementexperience, you may qualify at the GS-11 grade level. You qualifyfor the GS-11 grade level if you possess one year of specializedexperience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level,performing duties such as:
- Developing and utilizing intelligenceinformation to track illegal operations and/or contraband.
- Leading investigations of fraud, contraband, and/or illegaloperations to determine sources and patterns.
- Utilizing variousforms of complex technology that includes surveillance, detection,situation awareness systems, and communications equipment to aid inthe apprehension of violators of state, federal, or immigrationlaws.
- Communicating assignments and training peers on theapplication of the appropriate law enforcement problem-solvingmethods, investigative techniques, and other law enforcementprocedures.
- Working with law enforcement officials or governmentagencies to identify and/or apprehend violators of state, federal,or immigration laws.
There are no education substitutions for theGS-11 grade level opportunities.

Residency:
You must have had primary U.S. residency (including protectoratesas declared under international law) for at least three of the lastfive years.
Age Restriction:
In accordance with Public Law 100-238,this position is covered under law enforcement retirementprovisions. Candidates must be referred for selection to the BorderPatrol Agent position before reaching their 40th birthday inaccordance with Department of Homeland Security Directive 251-03.The age restriction may not apply if you are currently serving orhave previously served in a federal civilian law enforcement(non-military) position covered by Title 5 U.S.C. 8336(c) or Title5 U.S.C. 8412(d).

You may also be eligiblefor an excepted service Veterans’ Recruitment Appointment (VRA).The age restriction does not apply if you are Veterans’ Preferenceeligible.
Formal Training:
After you are hired, you will bedetailed to the U.S. Border Patrol Academy in Artesia, New Mexico,for approximately six (6) months of intensive instruction inimmigration and nationality laws, law enforcement, andUSBP-specific operations, drivers training, physical techniques,firearms, and other courses.
