Assists the District Attorney in the administration and work of the office. Provides advice to law enforcement personnel regarding investigations, the filing of charges, and arrests. Investigates cases; prepares indictments; interrogates witnesses; prepares cases for prosecution. Prosecutes criminal cases in Superior Court for the State of Georgia; assists fellow attorneys in court. Researches and writes appeals for the State of Georgia showing why the appellate court should uphold the case in question. Negotiates and handles guilty pleas with criminal defense attorneys. Manages an assigned caseload of felony cases. Prosecutes probation revocations when probationers are in violation. Defends Habeas Corpus actions. Attends Grand Jury proceedings. Prosecutes cases in Juvenile Court. Meets with and counsels the general public. Reviews expungement applications; approves or denies application. Drafts charging instruments for criminal violations; files instruments or submits the case to the Grand Jury. Arraigns defendants of their charges in recorder’s court. Presides over Mental Health Court. Performs other related duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge of the Rules of Evidence and of the Georgia Criminal Code. Knowledge of Georgia Rules of Court. Knowledge of local, state, and federal laws. Skill in the research, analysis, and presentation of legal issues. Skill in analyzing and applying law to specific substantive problems. Skill in negotiation and persuasion. Skill in using basic office equipment and computerized legal reference resources. Minimum Educational and Training Requirements A Law Degree from a Law School accredited by the American Bar Association is required. Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the diverse objectives and functions of the subunits in the department in order to direct and coordinate work within the department, usually interpreted to require three to five years of related experience.
