About the Patient’s Compensation Fund
The Patient’s Compensation Fund (PCF) was created in 1975 to provide an affordable and guaranteed medical malpractice coverage system for the private healthcare providers in the state. The Patient’s Compensation Fund is self-funded state entity, operating independently of the main state budget, and governed by the PCF Oversight Board. The Patient’s Compensation Fund provides protection for the healthcare system, keeping costs down, and providing a guaranteed pool of funds to pay those citizens injured from medical malpractice of private care providers.
We are a small agency invested to retain a skilled, productive, engaged, diverse team that we support through training and development, building connections, and supporting a harmonious work life while delivering quality services to the citizens of Louisiana.

This involves determining whether named healthcare providers are qualified participants in the Patient’s Compensation Fund in accordance with the Medical Malpractice Act, ensuring that the legislatively mandated fee of $100 per named defendant is collected and processed (which amounts to approximately $250,000-$300,000 per year), and notification of the claims to named defendants. The section is also responsible for different stages of the panel process, and responses to various credentialing agencies. The incumbent is also required to offer input and analysis for reports as requested by the Executive Director or PCF Oversight Board. Broad supervision is received from the Medical Malpractice Compliance Director. Direct line supervision is exercised over five (5) subordinate positions and indirect supervision of one (1) subordinate positions.
