Full Job Description Job Summary:
The Criminal District Court Advocate is based at the Orleans Parish Criminal District Court and provides court navigation and advocacy services for victims of domestic and sexual violence who are accessing court services. This position supports victims by explaining court processes and victims’ rights, accompanying them to first appearance hearings, and assisting them as they navigate the criminal legal system. The Criminal District Court Advocate also serves as a liaison and point of contact for victims at Criminal District Court, connecting them to services at the New Orleans Family Justice Center and other resources. The ideal candidate must be dedicated to working with survivors of domestic and sexual violence, demonstrate warmth in all client interactions, and be able to build rapport with trauma survivors from diverse backgrounds. The Criminal District Court Advocate will work closely with the New Orleans Health Department, the Orleans Parish Criminal District Court, and the Advocate-Initiated Response program to identify patterns and trends in domestic violence incidents, with a focus on improving victim-centered responses.
Specific Responsibilities Include:
Advise victims of their rights and support the exercise of those rights. Define and explain all aspects of the criminal justice system to victims. Attend first appearance hearings with victims to provide support and advocacy. Help victims access copies of Criminal District Court protective orders. Assist victims in making connections with the Orleans Parish District Attorney’s Office and Civil District Court. Understand and maintain client confidentiality. Research and maintain up-to-date knowledge of the criminal legal system, particularly in New Orleans, and how it impacts victims of domestic violence and their families. Maintain current knowledge of the dynamics of domestic violence and best practices, with a focus on trauma-informed care, equity, and the disparate impact of policies. Provide basic crisis intervention techniques for victims of domestic violence on an as-needed basis. Utilize established data tracking systems and maintain confidential reports and service notes. Attend pertinent meetings and trainings as requested by the Director of Client Services. Complete 40 hours of domestic violence training and 40 hours of sexual assault training provided by the NOFJC within the first year of employment. Perform other job-related duties as assigned by the Director of Client Service .
Minimum Requirements:
Bachelor’s Degree and two years previous experience in domestic violence service required. Prior experience working in the criminal legal system, particularly in New Orleans, preferred. Has the ability to communicate effectively with people from diverse cultures and backgrounds.
Proficiency Qualifications:
Works as a self-starter with a high level of attentiveness to detail. Possess outstanding customer service skills as well as excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills. Is organized, efficient and detail oriented. Has interest in working with survivors of domestic violence. Has the ability to communicate effectively with people of diverse cultures and backgrounds. Comfortable working in urgent and high energy work environment. Demonstrates commitment to the mission of the New Orleans Family Justice Center.
