Mercer University is currently searching for a highly motivated individual to serve as its next Director and Chief of Police. The Chief of Police will strategically support the university in advancing university priorities and will plan, direct, coordinate, and implement departmental goals, policies, procedures, and activities associated with the protection, safety, and welfare of students, faculty, staff, visitors, and University property. The Mercer Police Department is a certified police agency as defined under the Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Act. Its powers are outlined in Section {20-8-1} Law Enforcement Powers of Campus Policemen of the Official Georgia Code Annotated. Those duties listed in Section {20-8-1} include the enforcement of the laws of the state of Georgia; the preservation of public order; the protection of life and property; the prevention, detention, or investigation of a crime; or any combination thereof. Reporting to the Executive Vice President for Administration and Finance, the Director and Chief of Police will lead the Mercer University Police Department and oversee the daily operations of all uniformed police officers and dispatchers on the Macon and Atlanta campuses and will be responsible for long term planning, proactive security management, compliance, timely reporting, and adjusting practices to make the campus safer. Additionally, the Director/Chief will maintain a positive team culture that includes mentorship and excellence for the department’s staff of officers, dispatchers, and support personnel. Responsibilities The essential functions and responsibilities of the Director and Chief of Police may include, but are not limited to the following: Providing effective leadership and guidance to all Mercer Police staff by establishing and maintaining high-quality performance, a commitment to ethics and integrity, and efficient and effective use of resources. Overseeing physical safety and security of the Macon and Atlanta campuses, students, employees and visitors. Deploying effective communications strategies in support of overall campus safety and security. Fostering a culture based on the University’s mission and core values. Ensuring processes and procedures are in compliance with university, state, and federal regulations and laws. Managing departmental budgets and expenditures, determining needs, and establishing priorities. Working collaboratively with university leadership, other university offices as well as local and state law enforcement agencies. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, Public Safety, or other closely related field from an accredited university/college and a minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible management experience in law enforcement administration are required. In addition, candidates must meet the minimum standards set by the state of Georgia for police officers and must possess the Georgia law enforcement certification or have the ability to obtain within six months of employment. Successful candidates must have a valid Georgia driver’s license and be insurable by the University’s insurance carrier. Working knowledge of the Jeanne Cleary Disclosure of Campus Security and Campus Crime Statistics Act is highly desirable.
