POLICE TECHNICIAN
To perform a wide variety of specialized clerical duties in support of the Police Department including initiating, process, and maintaining documents, correspondence, and statistics; and to provide information and assistance to the public.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives general supervision from the Police Records Supervisor and management staff. Exercises no supervision.
EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND
DUTIEShEssential responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: Compile, type, record, and file a wide variety of police records, reports, and materials including memoranda, letters, reports, complaints, declarations, booking information, restraining orders, fingerprint cards, warrants, citations, and crime and traffic reports. Operate a computer terminal and printer to type, enter, modify, and retrieve a wide variety of police reports and records, memoranda, letters, and other material. Process, sort, file, copy, and distribute crime reports, traffic reports, citations, petitions, and other materials to appropriate personnel; transcribe reports from a dictation machine; assign case numbers; enter data into the computer system. Assist department personnel and the public in person and by phone including retrieving information and files, mailing out requested reports to outside agencies in accordance with established regulations, and providing general information regarding department policies, procedures and regulations. Serve as court liaison clerk; collect arrest, warrant, and traffic reports and citations for District Attorney and proper courts; prepare necessary documents for all arrests and citations; forward information to proper court; coordinate trial dates for Police Officers. Maintain a variety of police records filing systems; prepare and maintain legible, concise and understandable activity logs. Monitor and operate police radio transceiver to communicate with officers in the field; relay data from records or other information as requested; inform officers of pertinent information as relayed by teletype, other city departments, other police departments or other agencies. Interview crime victims in person or by telephone and prepare various reports; perform initial cross-correlation of theft and burglary reports with pawned items reports; attempt suspect development and identification. Collect citation fines and various fees; post, record, file, and issue receipts relating to the collection of various fees; maintain and balance a cashier’s drawer. Assess the nature and urgency of calls; note the circumstances and persons in relation to the content of the call; determine the urgency of the call; receive crime reports over the telephone as needed; gather necessary information. Perform a variety of special assignments; prepare statistical analysis of crimes, accidents, citations, or other incidents or departmental activities; prepare necessary reports; prepare uniformed crime reporting graph. Coordinate with attorney’s offices and officers to coordinate trial dates; inform officers of trial dates; inform attorneys of officer availability. Perform a variety of clerical duties including the preparation of forms and reports.

QUALIFICATIONS
Knowled~e of: English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Business letter writing and report preparation. Principles and procedures of record keeping. Modern office methods, practices, procedures and computer equipment.
Ability to:
Learn the organization, procedures and operating details of a law enforcement agency. Learn to perform a full range of specialized public safety clerical work under minimal supervision. Learn, correctly interpret and apply the laws, codes, policies and procedures related to the processing of law enforcement documents. Learn to operate police radio equipment to transmit and receive information. Maintain familiarity with city districts and boundaries, streets, landmarks, and police jurisdictions. Work courteously with the public on the telephone or in person. Maintain confidentiality of information. Work variable shifts. Maintain accurate records and files. Make arithmetical calculations quickly and accurately. Operate a variety of office equipment including a computer terminal. Type at the speed necessary for adequate job performance. Understand and carry out oral and written directions. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Experience:
One year of clerical work experience requiring record keeping, public contact, and the interpretation of rules and regulations. )
Training:
Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by specialized clerical training.
