TELECOMMUNICATOR 2.7 2.7

out of 5 stars Shelby, NC Performs intermediate technical work in a high stress environment, dispatching public safety, emergency services and other personnel, usually in response to emergency situations, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Telecommunicator Shift Supervisor. Schedules could include 12 hour shifts on a Panama rotation. Hours for the Panama rotation are either 7a-7p, 7p-7a, 3p-3a, or 9a-9p based on need.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Answers incoming calls for emergencies. Relays information to responding units via radio dispatch for Police, Fire and EMS. Operates and maintains electronic equipment, including computer-aided-dispatch (CAD) to maintain contact with law enforcement personnel, fire, rescue personnel; dispatches officers to answer requests for assistance; provides information about situations as they develop and/or background information from the DCI system. Processes emergency calls requiring medical assistance using EMD protocol; provides pre-arrival instructions to citizens. Answers and appropriately routes administrative lines. Processes requests for drivers’ license checks, license plate checks, and wanted and missing persons inquiries using DCI, eWarrants and RMS systems as requested by field units. Processes entries for wanted persons, missing persons, stolen and recovered guns, articles and securities into DCI system. Maintains DCI filing system and ensures information is entered, scanned and filled appropriately. Contacts public utilities as requested by responding units such as Duke Energy, REA, Water Department, Gas Department, Red Cross, and Railroad Services. Acts as primary contact for after hours for DSS, DOT, Animal Control, Coroner, and Fire Marshal. Maintains communications logs and reports including the nature of calls, actions taken, and the times involved. Identifies location of callers to choose and dispatch proper law enforcement, fire, or rescue department or unit. Monitors public and private fire and security alarm systems; activates monitors to dispatch volunteer fire and rescue; transfers appropriate calls to other agencies; monitors activities of officers on patrol and makes radio contact to ensure their safety.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

General knowledge of the methods of operating the communication system; general knowledge of radio and teletype procedures; general knowledge of local geography; general knowledge of law enforcement forms, terminology and records; general knowledge of departmental programs, policies and procedures; ability to perform a considerable volume of detailed work; ability to type accurately at a reasonable rate of speed; ability to speak distinctly; ability to deal with the public under stressful conditions and remain calm; ability to follow oral and written directions; ability to operate standard office equipment and personal computers including some knowledge of applicable software packages; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public.

EXPERIENCE & EDUCATION

High school diploma or GED and one year experience working with customer service, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 10 pounds of force; work regularly requires sitting, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel and reaching with hands and arms, frequently requires repetitive motions and occasionally requires walking and pushing or pulling; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data and operating machines; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).

DCI Certification EMD Certification Sheriff’s Standards for Telecommunicator •The above certifications must be obtained within 1 year of date of hire and maintained for continued employment• This position is subject to random drug screenings
