Job Description
: Performs general duty law enforcement work in transporting criminal inmates to and from various facilities throughout the state. An employee in this class is primarily responsible for transporting criminal inmates to and from various facilities throughout the state as well as a variety of law enforcement duties. Work includes serving legal papers, attending court, and answering complaint calls. Tact and firmness are required in frequent public contact. Work is performed in accordance with established policies and procedures of the Sheriffs Office and is supplemented by frequent specific instructions. The employee is subject to the usual hazards of law enforcement work. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Patrol Division Captain and Transport Sergeant and is evaluated in terms of adherence to office policies and procedures and the effectiveness with which assigned duties are performed.: – Assists in planning and arranging out-of-county transports and pickups of prisoners, overseeing expenditures related to overnight travel lodging and meals, fuel purchasing, and all other tasks and needs. Arranges and transports inmates out of state when necessary. – Answers complaint calls and assists in investigating crimes and disturbances, interviews witnesses, gathers evidence, interrogates suspects and makes arrests, and prepares investigation reports. – Serves legal papers such as summons, warrants, capiases, commitment papers, and special court orders. Makes arrests when necessary. May appear in court as a witness to give testimony as needed. Cooperates with law enforcement officers of other governmental agencies for transports.
Minimum Education and Experience:
Graduation from high school and some law enforcement training or experience preferred. Possession of a Basic Law Enforcement Training Certificate; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Certification as a law enforcement officer and completion of all requirements set in accordance with the North Carolina Sheriffs Training and Standards Commission. Possession of a valid North Carolina drivers license.: Serves in other capacities of the Sheriffs Office on an as needed basis including civil, investigations, patrol, and administrative divisions. Performs related work as required. Physical Requirements Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment including computers, typewriters, copiers, firearms, two-way radios, nightsticks, restraint devices, etc. Must be physically able to operate a motor vehicle. Must be able to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements are those for Heavy Work.
