SHERIFF – CAPTAIN OVERVIEW & PURPOSE
This position is assigned special management work supporting the Sheriff in the management of the Criminal Investigations, School Resource, Narcotics, and or Patrol Divisions of the Sheriff’s Office. Work includes planning, organizing, and directing the work of Criminal Investigation, School Resource, Narcotics, and or Patrol Divisions of the department for efficient and effective operations; coordinating the staffing of assigned division including training and work assignment; supervising assigned daily operations of the department through subordinate supervisors; purchasing equipment and supplies for assigned divisions; considerable participation in personnel actions for the department development and administration; assistance with budget development and administration; and other significant management tasks requiring significant knowledge of management, administration and law enforcement. Work requires significant judgment and leadership and strong management skills. Employees are subject to hazards in law enforcement with departmental policy and state, and federal law, supplemented with guidance from the Major, Chief Deputy and/or and community acceptance.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Plans, organizes, and directs multiple assigned departmental functions including criminal investigations, ICE, ACE, SRO, Narcotics, Crime Lab, and related functions through subordinate supervisors; researches and recommends policies; organizes work for efficient and effective processing. department; assists in developing and communicating the community policing philosophy of the department. Participates in the hiring and promotional process for the department; may be assigned responsibility for hiring including coordination with Sheriff Training and Standards, coordination of pre-employment physicals and drug screens; coordinates vehicle maintenance; teaches and coordinates in-service training; investigates accidents; coordinates provision of cell phones for department staff; serves as liaison with County Human Resources Department on personnel Oversees special Narcotics and Interstate Interdiction Teams; handles special funds for purchasing drugs and paying

Oversees specialized units such as the Homicide Team, Drone Program, Hostage Negotiations, R.A.D., and Threat Assessment Team.

“: Before assignment to sworn duties, employees must possess a valid North Carolina Driver’s License and have completed at least the minimum requirements established by the North Carolina Sheriff’s Training and Standards Commission for Certified Law Enforcement Officers with prospects of successfully completing the entire Certification process within prescribed time frames. Prefer advanced Law Enforcement Certification Will require some shift work and to respond as needed and to be On-Call when needed. “
