Police Cadet Recruitment Range:
$17.04-$19.81 hourly dependent on knowledge and experience This is the entry-level position for those who are interested in a career in law enforcement. An employee in this class may be assigned to the Police Department and other departments with public safety activities. An employee in this class is responsible for a variety of tasks related to law enforcement. Work is performed in accordance with departmental rules and regulations and cadet may be required to work shifts. Work assignments are received from a superior officer who evaluates performance through the review of work methods, procedures, and results. An employee appointed, as a Police Cadet shall remain on probation for the entire time the employee is in that classification. A cadet may be separated from employment at any time without appeal rights. This classification is established as an apprenticeship program. This apprenticeship program was established for applicants without law enforcement certification, but who are interested in a career in law enforcement. Since it is an apprenticeship program, cadets remain in a probationary status while employed as cadets. Cadets are assigned to various divisions in the Police Department (i.e., patrol, investigations, property management, crime scene, etc.) and typically work 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. daily and occasional weekends. Some assignments may require shift work. Assignments are received from a superior officer who evaluates performance through the review of work methods, procedures, and results.
Minimum Qualifications:
Cadet requires: High school graduation or equivalent, the ability to meet physical, mental, background, and medical requirements, and the ability to meet requirements for entry into police standards and training program within one year of employment. Must possess a valid Class E driver license.
Minimum age: 18. Visual acuity at least 20/100 uncorrected, corrected to 20/30 in each eye; must have color vision. Must be a U.S. citizen. Must complete a Nicotine Test at six (6) months of employment which indicates no tobacco presence and applicant must remain tobacco-free for the duration of employment or be terminated. Applicants will be required to sign a sworn affidavit. Applicants complete a background investigation, polygraph examination, drug screen, and comprehensive medical examination.
