VICTIM ADVOCATE

•JOB SUMMARY Performs responsible independent work acting as victim/witness advocate, as liaison between the State Attorney’s Office, the Court and related Federal and State agencies pursuant to applicable statutes, laws, and ordinances.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Responds to calls for service related to senior citizens and children who have been determined to be victims of crimes pursuant to Florida Statutes. Provides immediate assistance and coordination of victim’s rights and provides immediate follow up, coordination of other support services needed by the victim. Assist in the interview process regarding sexual or physical abuse cases or those involving neglect or exploitation to the extent medical determination can be made. Responsible for planning and coordination of victim services for the duration of the criminal prosecution and/or appeal process. Works closely with the State Attorney’s Office and court ensuring the victim and/or all witnesses are properly notified and coordinate their appearances and participation as necessary. Maintains extensive detailed case files on all victims relating to their respective cases and the final disposition of any investigations or final court decisions. Coordinates victim compensation paperwork through Federal and State agencies to ensure appropriate support is provided. Makes arrangements for counseling or other emotional and psychological support through appropriate Federal and State agencies. Make arrangements for and/or assist in providing transportation for out of town interviews/meetings/court appearances/depositions and other related functions as transportation is available. Performs all other related work pursuant to grant specifications and/or related amendments and other directives through the City Personnel Code and departmental policies and procedures. Additional duties as required.

MINIMUN QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED

High school diploma and completion of any approved criminal justice courses and/or counseling/psychological courses; or Any combination of education, training, and experience that provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS

Valid Driver’s License

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of:

Federal, state, county, and municipal laws and ordinances. Organizational and operational functions of the judicial system. Departmental policies and procedures. Geographical/cultural/demographics of service area. Correct usage of English language, including spelling, grammar, punctuation, vocabulary, etc. Working knowledge of computer based technologies and report generation.

Skill in:

Precise, clear and effective oral communications. Completing all tasks and follows up on assignments without immediate supervision. Use and operation of motor vehicle, communications equipment, electronic devices and computers.

Mental and Physical Abilities:

Ability to apply common sense in a tactful, pleasant demeanor towards problem solving and investigate activity while interfacing with victims of crimes and/or witnesses related to thereof. Ability to comprehend, understand, interpret, and carry out both oral and written instructions with close detail and accuracy. Must be able to read, comprehend computer text and related software and hardware configurations. Must be able to hear oral statements and translate and document for reporting purposes all information through the criminal justice system.

Working conditions:

Standing, walking, sitting, typing, writing. Frequent change of hours and response to critical situations. Exposure to blood born pathogen activities related to sexual and/or physical abuse cases. Exposure to conditions associated with violent and/or hostile persons/victims/witnesses. Irregular work hours, shifts, and on-call status at any time.
