Public Safety Officer 3.4 3.4 out of 5 stars 4640 North Henry Boulevard, Stockbridge, GA 30281 JOB SUMMARY The purpose of this classification is to assist the Police Department in providing administrative and low-risk services that are often handled by police officers to free them up to handle higher priority risk calls. This classification does not have arrest powers and has a limited amount of enforcement responsibilities, specifically pertaining to parking management.

MAJOR DUTIES

The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned. Respond to dispatched low-risk calls for service in the field by means of driving a city vehicle. Write formal police reports stemming from citizens in the field, on the phone, and at the police department. Write reports of lost or found property. Assist stranded motorists. Write abandoned vehicle reports. Assists in the collection, transportation, and submission of crime scene evidence. Conduct private property accident investigations, which do not require a physical arrest. Write theft reports, where the suspect is no longer at the scene. Write harassing and /or obscene phone call reports. Complete other administrative functions often handled by police officers. Assists in traffic control. Assists with special events. Perform community outreach. Assist with crime prevention programs. Monitor security cameras. Placement of mobile assets to include message boards, speed trailers, and other equipment. Provides residential and business checks. Provides resources to city services. Performs administrative duties. Performs parking enforcement as it relates to parking management. Other calls of non-emergency, low-risk nature.

Knowledge of modern office procedures, methods, and equipment including computers and supporting word processing and spreadsheet applications. Knowledge of occupational hazards and standard safety practices. Knowledge of operations, sentices, and activities of a municipality. Knowledge of principles and procedures of record keeping. Knowledge of procedures involved in the methods and techniques of conducting and documenting field investigations.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Sit or stand for prolonged periods; correctable visual acuity to read a computer screen and a typeset page; fine finger dexterity to manipulate computer keyboard and mouse; speak audibly and clearly; hear in-person, radio, and telephone conversations; occasionally transport objects weighing up to 25 lbs. Effective audio and visual discrimination and perception are needed to make observations; read and write; drive safely and simultaneously operate emergency lights, sirens, radio, and computer;

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed predominantly in a variety of field-based environments and less in office settings and may require exposure to dangerous situations; if justified, willing to work any hour of the day or night (shift work), overtime, weekends on call and holidays; work at any location in the city and travel in specific assignments.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

High School diploma or Associate’s degree supplemented by specialized training and/or college level coursework in criminal justice, public administration, business administration, or other related field; two (2) years of work experience involving a high level of public contact including some experience dealing with the public in an enforcement, inspection, investigation, or customer service capacity; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job; valid Georgia Driver’s License; successfully passed pre-employment medical and drug screen; satisfactory motor vehicle record (MVR); and acceptable background investigation.
