  • Prepares for work; receivesinstruction from platoon commander regarding assignment (beat)and/or specific patrol targets during daily line-up; inspectspatrol car, equipment and weapons to ensure proper operation.
  • Patrols the district on foot or in patrol car; operates MobileVideo Terminal computer in patrol car; operates radio; detectscriminal activity; and communicates with the public.
  • Responds tocall for service; resolves disputes; admonishes individuals;responds to accidents; and provides emergency first-aid.
  • Conductsinvestigations; conducts a preliminary investigation at the sceneof a crime; searches area for suspects or evidence; interviewssuspects, witnesses and victims; obtains case numbers; and obtainsbackground information from dispatch or the computer.
  • Promotescommunity policing; speaks to merchants regarding potentialproblems in the area; explains to citizens laws, ordinances, andtheir rights in resolving disputes; speaks to citizens in sectorwhile on patrol; attends community meetings; and participates incommunity-based programs.
  • Makes arrests and/or detains suspects
  • Pursues suspects; chases suspects; sets up perimeters; andcommunicates with partner to coordinate chase.
  • Enforces trafficand parking violations.
  • Writes reports; keeps records; drawsaccident scene diagrams; competes forms and maintains logs.
  • Interacts with superiors, peers, and other department personnel.
  • Prepares and participates in planned events; stands and directstraffic at accident scenes, demonstrations, or planned events;controls crowds; cooperates with other city and state agencies tosecure area at planned event or crime scene.
  • Prepares for andattends court; reviews reports and other related documents;testifies in court; meets with the Assistant District Attorney todiscuss cases.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Education:

    Applicants must be a United States HighSchool Graduate, or have passed a G.E.D. or the California HighSchool Proficiency Examination, or have an AA or higher degree froma United States accredited college or university.

  • Age:

    Applicantsmust be at least 20 years old when they take the examination and atleast 21 years of age by the time of appointment. (Civil ServiceRule 210.10)

Driver’s License:

Applicants must possess andmaintain a valid driver license to operate an automobile at thetime of application and throughout the selection process.

Possession of a valid California Driver License is required priorto the date of hire.

  • Judicial Record:

    Applicants must NOT havebeen:

  • Convicted of a felony;
  • Convicted of an offense involvingdomestic violence;
  • Convicted of any misdemeanor that carries apenalty of prohibiting ownership, possession or control or afirearm; or

There are threecomponents to the FrontLine National exam: a video-based humanrelations test, a reading ability test, and a written languageability test.

      70 Candidates must pass each test independently. Thescores are not averaged. b) Post Entry Level Law Enforcement TestBattery (PELLETB) The PELLETB exam developed by the CaliforniaCommission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) andmeasures reading comprehension and writing abilities. Applicantswho have taken the POST written within the last two years and haveachieved a t-score of 42 or higher will also be exempt from thewritten examination. A copy of the documentation which includes thedate of the POST test and score on valid agency letterhead must besubmitted with your application. c) Bachelor’s Degree or HigherCandidates who completed a Bachelor’s degree or higher will bewaived from the written examination. A copy of your Bachelor’sdegree or higher diploma must be submitted with your application.

      Candidates who attain passing scores on the FrontLine National Examor the PELLETB or have a Bachelor’s degree or higher will benotified to take a Physical Ability Test (PAT) and an OralInterview (OI). Physical Ability Test (Pass/Fail) The PAT willassess physical abilities needed to perform essential policeofficer tasks and successfully complete academy training throughfour events.

      The physical abilities include:

      muscular strength,muscular endurance, aerobic capacity, equilibrium, and abilitiesinvolving all-out effort. Oral Interview (100%) The OI will assesscommunity involvement, interest and motivation, interpersonalskills, problem solving, oral communication skills and abilitiesnot tested by other examination components. The OI score will beused to place candidates on the eligible list. Eligible ListRankings Candidates will be notified via email of their pass/failstatus on the PAT and OI. Those that do not pass may requestanother opportunity to re-take the test no sooner than three (3)months [90 calendar days] from their previous attempt. Inaccordance with Civil Service Commission Rule 211.16.1, candidatesmay appeal the administration of the examination components. Allappeals must be filed in writing with the Department of HumanResources within five (5) calendar days of the administration ofthe examination component giving rise to the appeal. A day that theDepartment of Human Resources is closed shall not be counted as thefifth (5th) calendar day.
