About this Job
This vacancy is located in the Capitol Detail Section in the Department of Public Safety and Corrections/Office of State Police located in East Baton Rouge Parish. Capitol Detail

  • Officers assigned to these duties conduct proactive police patrols of the State Capitol Complex and downtown Baton Rouge.

Officers enforce state and local laws and ordinances, conduct proactive traffic and criminal enforcement, investigate crimes, and prevent and deter unlawful activity. In addition to their police duties, officers frequently act as ambassadors of the state as they interact with visitors to our great state.
State Facilities Security

  • Officers assigned to these duties provide police protection to thousands of state employees and visitors throughout Louisiana.

These officers enforce state and local laws and ordinances, conduct frequent security patrols, investigate crimes, and prevent and deter unlawful activity.
Minimum Qualifications
No experience or training is required.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must be at least 21 years of age.
Possession of a current driver’s license.
Willingness and ability to attain a Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certification.
An applicant who has been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence or a felony, or who is under indictment on a felony charge will be disqualified by the hiring agency until relief from the disabilities imposed by state and federal laws is granted.

Job Duties:

Learns about law enforcement activities designed to impact public safety services.
Learns about crash investigation, traffic and criminal enforcement, defensive tactics, firearms use, and constitutional law.
Learns about how to investigate complaints, write reports, and provide public safety service.
Learns about protocols for emergency response during large scale events, disasters, and other events with statewide impact.
Learns protocol for investigations of criminal complaints.
Trains for certification in emergency vehicle operation, firearms, defense tactics, crash investigation, officer survival, de-escalation, leadership, enforcement of traffic and criminal laws, as well as other pertinent training courses.
Completes DPS Police specific training provided by the Louisiana State Police Training Academy or DPS Police Instructors

During the interview process, you will indicate your preference of section Commanders will consider this when making hiring recommendations.

Typical job duties include:

Applicants must be able to qualify with firearms, complete advanced driver and weapons training, pass a thorough background investigation, and meet all annual training requirements.
Starting pay is determined by your level of experience according to the following schedule:
DPS Cadet (0-3 years of law enforcement experience. No minimum experience is required)

  • $42,016 per year
    DPS Officer (3 years as a POST-certified police officer with the power of arrest)
  • $ 49,670 per year
    DPS Senior Officer (4 years as a POST-certified police officer with the power of arrest)
  • $ 53,144
    Experienced officers who are POST Certified may be hired at up to $31.

17 an hour ($64,834 per year). Only well-qualified applicants with additional certifications and more than 10 years of service will qualify for this starting pay rate.

Applicants must have a Civil Service test score for 2100-PSE (Protective Services Exam) in order to be considered for this vacancy. If you do not have a score prior to applying to this posting, it may result in your application not being considered.
