JOB SUMMARY:

The Somerville Housing Authority (SHA) is a large sized Public Housing Authority that seeks candidates for the positions of full and/or part-time Police Officers within the Somerville Housing Authority Police Department (SHAPD). The Department is a Police Officer Standards and Training (POST) certified law enforcement agency. Candidates must be able to work all shifts, including holidays and weekends. Some overtime is mandatory, and applicants are expected to understand this.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Performs law-enforcement related duties associated with the protection of people and property at locations managed by the Somerville Housing Authority (SHA) in coordination with the City of Somerville Police Department.

Additional duties and responsibilities include:
  • Provide a safety and security presence at all Somerville Housing Authority managed properties.
  • Adhere to SHA Police Department and Somerville Housing Authority policies and rules and regulations.
  • Responding to parking issues, motor vehicle accidents, medical emergencies, fires, safety hazards, and security alarms received, on SHA property
  • Conduct security and safety inspections of buildings and grounds, open and secure buildings, and perform crime prevention functions.
  • Render public relations services to the SHA community, assist motorists, conduct escorts and perform other traffic duties.
  • Participate in education programs designed to increase awareness of crime prevention measures and personal safety.
  • Participate in SHA community relations meetings and/or initiatives.
  • Other duties, of the class, as assigned.

Police Officer(s) will patrol all SHA locations located in Somerville by vehicle and/or foot. The duties and responsibilities outlined above are designed to serve as a guideline, and do not, in any way, restrict the Housing Authority, through its Executive Director, from amending or augmenting these duties and responsibilities by oral or written instructions, directives or memoranda.

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

:

Minimum Requirements:
  • Be at least 21 years of age.
Education:

High school diploma or GED equivalent.

    License:

    Possess a current and valid Massachusetts motor vehicle operator’s license with a safe driving history.

    • Massachusetts Class A License to Carry
    Background:

    Must pass a thorough background investigation

      Training:

      Ability to successfully complete CPR and First Aid training.

        Medical:

        Must pass a medical examination.

          Psychological:

          Must pass a psychological examination

            Drug Screen:

            Must pass a drug screen.

            • Demonstrate excellent people skills employing effective community service orientation
            • techniques, ensuring positive and professional interactions are initiated and maintained with SHA community members.
            • Ability to complete all reports required in a clear and precise manner.
            • Good judgment and independent decision making
            • Appointees must be eligible for appointment as a Special Police Officer in accordance with the City of Somerville’s City Charter.

            SALARY:

            Commensurate with experience and negotiable within a range of $65,000 to $71,000. This agency is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity Employer.
