The Police Officer assists in all types of emergency situations andassures orderly movement of traffic on campus. The Police Officeralso enforces North Carolina State Laws and City Ordinances.
JobDescriptionEssential Functions:
Patrols University property on foot, bicycle, or in a vehicleto protect lives and property. Conducts investigations of all accidents, crimes, and incidentsby interviewing victims, witnesses, and suspects, through theidentification and collection of physical evidence, searchingpersons, vehicles, and other premises in accordance with legalguidelines. Responds to all emergency calls including potentially violentand life-threatening situations. Provides crime prevention strategies; inspects Universityproperty for safety hazards, equipment malfunctions, unsecureddoors, or other unusual occurrences; refers victims to appropriateservices; provides directions, escorts, vehicle, and door unlockassistance, operates necessary equipment. Enforces state laws, city ordinances, and Universityregulations. Responds to fire, intrusion, and security alarms and emergencycall boxes. Integrates Community Policing into routine patrol activity andutilizes COPS concepts to resolve problems. Responds to radio communications. Renders immediate and temporary medical aid to injured and/orill persons in emergency situations. Intervenes and diffuses crisis situations as non-violently aspossible. Documents all activities and prepares written reports asrequired by departmental policy. Prosecutes offenders as necessary by filing criminal charges,referral to the appropriate University authorities, or throughother measures such as trespassing non-students. Performs other related duties as assigned. Takes corrective actions for violators of crimes or policiesand investigates cases as assigned. Utilizes SARA model of Community Policing in a collaborativemanner to develop, implement, and deliver efficient and effectivelaw enforcement and community services.
Other Functions:
Attends and represents the University as assigned at variousmeetings, events, etc. Works special assignments. Prepares and presents testimony in criminal, traffic, judicialhearings, and grand jury. Attends advanced and specialized training activities.
RequiredEducation, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
High school diploma plus specialized training with two yearsrelated experience, or an equivalent combination of education andexperience. Valid driver’s license with good driving record. Must beinsurable. Must meet all requirements to become certified as a LawEnforcement Officer in accordance with the provisions of the NorthCarolina Criminal Justice Education and Training StandardsCommission (Basic Law Enforcement Training [BLET]certification). Will be required to work rotating shifts of eight, ten, andtwelve hours, including holidays, weekends, and overtime and inadverse weather conditions as needed.
Preferred Education,Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
Sworn law enforcement experience in a campus environment. Knowledge of Federal laws, North Carolina General Statutes,Winston-Salem City ordinances and Wake Forest Universitypolicies. Effective communication skills (oral and written) and abilityto interact in a courteous and professional manner with the public,representatives of the legal system, Police Department personnel,University officials, faculty, staff, students, and visitors. Ability to prepare written reports of activities and incidentswith accuracy and attention to detail. Ability to act and direct the actions of others quickly andmake intelligent decisions in emergency situations. Ability to maintain considerable working knowledge of modernpolicing principles. Ability to adapt to an often-changing work schedule, which mayinclude days, nights, weekends, and holidays.
Accountabilities:
Reviews or oversees the work of less experienced officers insome circumstances. Assists in providing problem solving assistance to students incooperation with other University departments. Responsible for extreme accuracy, attention to details, andcomprehensiveness. Reports to Police Sergeant. Error may result in death or injury of individuals, loss, ordamage to property, both personal and University owned, wrongfulconviction of innocent individuals, failure to convict guiltyindividuals and civil damages. Most instructions to the employee will be given by theimmediate supervisor. Oral and written instructions will be provided, but it isimportant that the employee be able to make independentdecisions.
Physical Requirements:
Must have vision correctable to 20/20 and meet color visionrequirements. Must be able to use a variety of law enforcement machines,instruments, and tools including radios, computers, automobiles,emergency, and investigative equipment, correctly andeffectively. Must be able to meet the other physical requirements listed bythe North Carolina Training and Standards Commission. May be exposed to hazardous materials, chemicals, explosions,or loud noises. May be required to drive departmental vehicles for long periodsof time.
Medium work:
Exerting up to 5 pounds of force occasionally orup to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds offorce constantly to move objects. May be required to exert extreme physical effort in subduing anarrestee, restraining individuals, performing a rescue operation,or activity. May be required to stand on foot for long periods of time. Must be able to perform the following physical activities:stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, walking,pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking,hearing and engage in repetitive motions like run/sprint distances,climb stairs/ladders and other physical activities as necessary inemergency situations.
Environmental Conditions:
The physical environment requires the employee to work bothinside and outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/aridconditions. Standing, walking, sitting for periods oftime.
