Instruction and training will include such areas as routine patrol, traffic accident and criminal investigation, police vehicle maintenance, traffic enforcement, and responding to service calls. Work is performed under the immediate supervision of a Police Sergeant or other senior law enforcement officer or supervisor and is evaluated for effectiveness, visibility, compliance with standards, public support, and attainment of BLET Certification.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Cadet will perform administrative tasks at the Police Department as well as participate in, and remain in good standing at, and pass all required testing during, BLET training. The following subject areas will be the focus of the on-the-job portion of training: Patrols community to engender their trust and support; checks security of buildings and residences; Investigates traffic accidents; uses measurement devices, eye witness accounts, and determines violations; assists motorists in the exchange of information; provides information to insurance companies regarding accidents; verifies vehicle registrations and ensures compliance with inspections lawsConducts pre-tour of duty inspections of vehicle and equipment to ensure readiness with fuel, tire air pressure, and warning sirens and lights and all other support equipment is operationalEnforces speed limits by monitoring heavy speeding areas for visibilityObserves and follows people violating traffic laws, vehicle registrations and inspections laws, and other traffic offenses; Conducting criminal investigations by gathering information, processing crime scenes, and interviewing witnesses; Recommends solutions to resolve conflictsRegularly and predictably attends workPerforms related work as required
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
Education Graduation from high school; an Associate’s degree in Criminal Justice is preferred; regularly and predictable attend Basic Law Enforcement course, and maintain appropriate passing grades at Basic Law Enforcement Training, required. ExperiencePrior law enforcement experience is desiredSpecial RequirementsValid North Carolina Drivers’ LicenseMust maintain regular attendance and remain in good standing at Basic Law Enforcement (BLET) training for the purpose of becoming a sworn Law Enforcement Officer through the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission and receive such Certification in a reasonable time period following the successful completion of BLET.Immunization against Hepatitis A and B is indicated for this position.
