Full Time – Grade 5 SUMMARY The School Resource Officers are under the direct supervision of the SRO Corporal and SRO Sergeant. This position is based within the Tullahoma School System, providing security and information on special programs as required. The School Resource Officer performs the function of protecting property, facilities and citizens through law enforcement.

EXAMPLES OF RESPONSIBILITY
  • Maintain and coordinate activities with the SRO Corporal, SRO Sergeant and school principals on a daily basis.
  • Assist administration in developing plans and strategies to prevent and/or minimize dangerous situations.
  • Serves as a resource for specialized programs that relate to law enforcement, student safety or other relevant educational programs.
  • Serve as a member of the school safety committee and coordinate security and safety measures in the event of an emergency.
  • The SRO will, whenever possible, participate and attend school functions on school property as requested by the principal.
  • Provide law enforcement actions, when requested by administration, against intruders and unwanted guests at school or school related functions.
  • Serve as a liaison between school and law enforcement agencies including directing and supervising security personnel at school events.
  • Responsible for maintaining records of the operation of the SRO program.
  • Counsel students on security, drug awareness and other related issues and also be available for questions and concerns from parents of students who attend Tullahoma High School.
  • Responsible for patrol of the buildings and grounds maintaining high visibility.
  • Obtain petitions on unruly juveniles and represent the school in court when necessary.
  • School Resource Officer also functions as a Patrol Officer when needed which includes, but is not limited to, enforcing City ordinances and State laws, patrolling the City limits, controlling traffic and preparing required reports.
  • Operate vehicles in a safe manner.
  • Perform related work as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Excellent interpersonal relations skills and techniques.
  • Requires good oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with associates, representatives of other agencies and the general public.
  • Knowledge of City of Tullahoma rules, regulations and procedures and Tullahoma City School rules, regulations and procedures.
  • Able to function as a role model to students, the community and other high school personnel.
  • Knowledge of City Ordinances and State laws, and ability to explain and interpret pertinent provisions.
  • Ability to enforce laws firmly, tactfully and with respect for the rights of others.
  • Meet POST requirements in firearms standards and maintains skill in the use and care of firearms.
  • General knowledge of the street system and physical layout of the city.
  • Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergency situations and to determine proper course of action.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Valid Tennessee Driver’s License
EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATIONS
  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Associates degree or 60 hours of college coursework preferred.
  • POST Certification required.
  • Completion of 40 hours training with the National Association of School Resource Officers within one year of appointment to position.
  • Experience as an instructor preferred.
  • Must not have a prior record of criminal activity.
  • Qualifications as outlined in the Tennessee Code Annotated.
ADA REQUIREMENTS

Physical Requirements – Physical demand requirements are at levels for those of active work. Regular performance of heavier tasks such as walking over rough or uneven surfaces; bending, kneeling, stooping, reaching above shoulder level and working in confined spaces; lifting or carrying weights of twenty to fifty pounds and occasionally very heavy items of one hundred pounds or over. Tasks may require infrequent exposure to adverse environmental conditions (cold, rain, fumes, chemical sprays). Sensory Requirements – Tasks require visual perception and discrimination including color and depth. Tasks require perception and discrimination of odor and sound.
