Full Job Description Locations:

Brevard County (Melbourne, Cocoa Beach, Titusville, Palm Bay) and Seminole County (suburban greater Orlando, Sanford, Altamonte Springs, Winter Springs, Lake Mary) Who we are: The Public Defender is appointed by judges to represent clients in criminal, juvenile and mental health matters in Florida’s courts. We are responsible for defending individuals who face the loss of their liberty and are determined by the court to be unable to pay for a private attorney.

Position Information:

Entry-Level Assistant Public Defender position in Brevard and Seminole Counties of Florida. Starting salary is $70,000, plus excellent benefits (e.g. $10 a month health insurance; $30 for entire family) as an employee of the State of Florida plus paid time off, 30 days per year. Assistant Public Defenders who are first time home buyers are eligible for money for down payment and closing costs under the Hometown Heroes Program of the Florida Housing Finance Corporation. The Public Defender hires out-of-state Bar members who are not licensed to practice law in Florida under Rule 11-1.9 of the Rules Regulating the Florida Bar, Certification of Members of Out-of-State Bars https://www-media.floridabar.org/uploads/2024/07/2025_01-JULY-Chapter-11-7-8-2024.pdf (see rule for details, conditions). The Public Defender can hire law school graduates who failed the Florida Bar examination if the graduate has gotten an initial letter of clearance from the Florida Board of Bar Examiners under Rule 11-1.8. The office pays attorneys’ Florida Bar dues and pays for attorneys to attend excellent trial training and continuing legal education (CLE) courses.
