The Legal Aid Society’s Immigrant Advocacy Project provides free legal services to immigrants applying for lawful permanent residency, with a focus on noncitizen victims of domestic violence and dependent immigrant children, and community education in the area of immigration and nationality law.

JOB SUMMARY

Provides support services to project attorneys and paralegals. Work is continually monitored and evaluated by the Project attorneys.

Work schedule is as follows:

generally, Monday through Friday 9:00 am – 5:00 pm with occasional evening or weekend work.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Maintain confidentiality of all information handled. Perform initial client intake and interviews in English and Spanish. Answer and promptly return client phone calls in English and Spanish. Interpret for Spanish-speaking clients at office appointments and calls, and at administrative proceedings before USCIS, ICE and other governmental entities. Prepare written translation (Spanish and English) of client documents and attorney letters. Perform outreach activities as necessary in English and Spanish, including conducting informational presentations for the community and interpreting for Spanish-speaking audiences. Assist attorney with hearing/interview preparation. Prepare legal documents and immigration application packages for attorney review. Perform research on immigration, citizenship, and public assistance issues. Maintain attorney schedules. Assist in grant reporting and maintenance. Track time and case statistics for grant reporting. Open/close and maintain client files. Update case progress notes in case management system. Organize, box, and prepare files for closing and storage. Be punctual and timely in meeting all performance requirements. Maintain courteous, professional, and effective working relationships with employees and clients of the organization. Attend staff and other meetings in the community as assigned. Comply with all agency policies and procedures, including the office dress code. Timely complete employee daily dockets and time cards. Assist the Executive Director and/or supervisor with special projects, assignments and any additional duties as deemed appropriate or as needed.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Associate’s Degree (A.A.) or equivalent of a two-year college or paralegal school; or six months to one year of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Must pass Level 2 background screening and internal conflict check process. Proficiency in spelling, punctuation and grammar in both English and Spanish. Excellent communication skills (verbal and written) in English and Spanish and typing skills. Access to reliable transportation as the employee will occasionally be required to travel to Belle Glade, Royal Palm Beach, Miami, Miramar and other South Florida locations at various times of day. Ability to understand and follow detailed instructions. Ability to multitask, timely complete work and rise to unexpected challenges. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and Outlook. Knowledge of Excel is a plus. Punctual and dependable. Enthusiasm for learning new information and capacity to adapt to changes. Excellent organization, problem-solving, interpersonal and analytical skills. Good judgment, efficiency, and concern for interest of clients. Professionalism in all dealings with clients and coworkers. Ability to work well with others to form a positive and supportive team atmosphere. Ability to work quietly, independently, and responsibly. Ability to speak before large groups.

SALARY:

Salary range depending on experience. Full benefits package in addition to salary includes: Vacation leave earnings equal 2.4 weeks a year (beginning the first of the month after 30 days of employment) and increases to 3 weeks a year after two years of employment. Sick leave earnings equal 2.4 weeks a year (beginning the first of the month after 30 days of employment). 13-15 paid holidays per year (depending on court schedule). Health, dental and vision insurance (beginning first of the month after 30 days of employment). Employer paid short-term disability/long-term disability and life insurance (beginning first of the month after 30 days of employment). Employer matches up to 3% of 401K plan contribution (eligible after one year of service). Salary paid bi-weekly by direct deposit. Mileage and reimbursements processed weekly.
