OVERALL RESPONSIBILITIES

The Head of Defense leads the integrated strategy and operations of MagMutual’s Defense organization. This executive role is responsible for delivering exceptional outcomes for policy owners. Reporting jointly to the Chief Defense Transformation and Operations Officer and the Chief Litigation and Defense Strategy Officer, the Head will ensure coordinated and consistent management of all defense services. The position is also accountable for oversight of third-party administrators (TPAs) and for establishing scalable claims governance for non-MPL lines of business as MagMutual continues to diversify. The Head of Defense plays a critical role in shaping a best-in-class policyholder experience and driving MagMutual’s long-term enterprise performance.

SPECIFIC DUTIES

Provide executive leadership over the full lifecycle of physician and hospital medical professional liability (MPL) claims, including high-severity, complex litigation. Oversee and align the operations of internal Defense, including internal counsel case selection, trial-readiness, performance standards, and litigation outcomes. Lead the unification of Claims and MMPO Defense into a cohesive Defense unit, ensuring strategic alignment, cultural integration, and operational consistency. Develop and implement claims governance and oversight structures for emerging and non-MPL lines of business to ensure quality, reserving discipline, compliance, and reporting. Manage all third-party administrator (TPA) relationships across lines of business, including vendor selection, contracting, service level enforcement, and performance evaluation. Promote a high-quality, policyholder-first experience across the entire claim and litigation lifecycle. Define and manage performance metrics and key indicators, including indemnity and expense trends, litigation success rates, resolution cycle time, and file quality. Drive litigation management best practices and innovation, including digital tools, analytics, and governance frameworks. Ensure compliance with all legal, regulatory, and internal governance standards. Attract, develop, and retain top legal and claims talent, building a unified culture of excellence, collaboration, and accountability..

QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

Juris Doctor (JD) required; active license to practice law preferred. Minimum of 15 years of senior leadership experience overseeing a large, complex portfolio of physician and hospital MPL claims. Proven experience integrating claims and legal defense teams under a unified strategy and leadership model. Demonstrated success managing TPAs and creating scalable oversight structures for new or diversified insurance lines. Deep understanding of MPL litigation trends, evolving healthcare liability risk, and insurer operational drivers. Track record of delivering results in indemnity performance, litigation outcomes, and policyholder satisfaction. Strategic and operational leader with strong transformation, change management, and team-building capabilities. Executive presence and communication skills, with the ability to influence across all levels of the organization and externally.
