DESCRIPTION
The purpose of this classification is to provide research, legal counsel, and advice to assigned judges in civil and criminal cases. The Judicial Staff Attorney assists the judges by performing various legal works involving research and legal writing and prepares orders, legal memorandums, briefs, pleadings, and related documents, reviews, and discusses pointof law with judges and attorneys. Duties will vary based on the preferences of the assigned judges. Minimal travel within and outside the circuit is required.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Conducts legal research; identifies and investigates the facts of legal matters; reviews legal opinions and various legal publications for research purposes; determines laws applicable to issues before court; drafts legal documents/memoranda on court cases, writs, and specific points of law; and briefs judge on issues in pending cases Composes and prepares orders for judge’s review and/or signature Evaluates and analyzes orders and motions, and monitors orders and motions for compliance with judicial rules, regulations and guidelines Attends, at the judge’s request, court activities, consulting with assigned judge and other judges and attorneys Serves as a liaison to the general public; responds to and initiates telephone calls and emails; answers questions and provides information; and discusses content of communications with judge as needed Keeps accurate records of legal documents Perform other duties of a similar nature or level
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Education:
Graduation from an accredited school of law {Please note: Upon job offer, you will be required to provide proof of education. Be sure to have the appropriate documents readily available.}
Experience:
Previous work experience preferred but not necessary
Knowledge/Skills/ Abilities:
Must possess thorough knowledge of law and research procedures Basic knowledge of the criminal justice system, especially the court system Ability to operate a variety of automated office equipment such as computers, printers, facsimilemachines, and telephones Effective written and oral skills are required Ability to apply sound research concepts Research, analyze, and digest legal facts and precedents Comprehend and follow oral and written instructions Establish and maintain a loyal, trusting relationship with associates, superiors, and subordinates Recognize the inherent need for confidentiality
Licensing/Certification:
Must be registered to take the next scheduled Bar Exam or awaiting exam results contingent upon a passing score or be a member of the State Bar of Georgia
