Job Description
Position Title:
School-based Homeless/Newcomer Family Specialist
Location:
Office of Students, Family & Community Engagement
Reports To:
Family Resource Center and School-Based Principal
Job Overview:
To identify students and families who are Newcomers and/or experiencing homelessness or housing instability and connect them with city and state resources. To support Family Engagement initiatives at the school and community.
Responsibilities:
- Coordinate with the District point of contact and community to assist homeless and newcomer families in getting essential resources, family support, and well-being.
- To advocate collaboratively with school administrators and staff to ensure homeless and newcomer students receive the educational, social, and emotional needs to succeed academically.
- Monitor attendance and truancy of homeless and newcomer students and support with home visits if needed.
- Conduct home visits and provide services in the field, including transportation.
- Maintain documentation and records by Lawrence Public School policies.
- Investigate attendance problems reported to the school by other personnel or community members.
- Participate on Student Support Team relative to attendance issues and parent involvement.
- Assist with the collection and dissemination of appropriate information relative to the Department of Transitional Assistance, the Department of Social Services, the Department of Mental Health, and Social Security.
- Research and compile resource packet for families
- Recruit families for the School Site Council and Family Council
- Represent the LHS family and community events throughout the year
- Collaborate with staff and teams in the development and implementation of multi-tiered systems of social emotional targeted interventions at the building level
- Attend district wide trainings/meetings, staff meetings and attendance meetings
- Participate in any School Climate / SEL initiatives as your school sees fit to incorporate and provide family and community feedback and a family and community “lens”.
- Engage, educate, empower, and support all families in becoming active and equal partners in their students’ learning.
- Lead, create, and develop all family engagement operations, workshop opportunities, partner collaboration, in conjunction with your school’s leadership team and if applicable community partnerships and Student Support Team.
- Focus on school-wide family engagement initiatives that provide opportunities for engagement, education, and collaboration between home, school, and community.
- Perform related duties as requested as needed by Principal and Assistant Principal
Education and Experience Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree Preferred
- Experience working with youth and families from inner-city communities.
- Bilingual in English and Spanish.
- Exceptional interpersonal skills, communication skills, and an ethical mindset
- Active listening, presentation, and conflict resolution skills
- Extremely punctual and reliable, highly organized and detail-oriented.
- Computer skills/ proficiency
- Lawrence Resident Highly preferred
- Must have reliable transportation
- Ability to work some evenings and weekends as needed
- Other duties as assigned
