The Mississippi Department of Child Protection Services (MDCPS) is committed to protecting and nurturing Mississippi’s at-risk children and families. If you have any additional questions, you can contact Shannon Rushton, Deputy Director of Human Capital, shannon.rushton@mdcps.ms.gov About the Position The Mississippi Department of Child Protection Services (MDCPS) is looking for an attorney to serve as Deputy General Counsel for the agency. The Deputy General Counsel will be primarily responsible for managing and supervising agency attorneys who serve as counsel for MDCPS in Youth Court and related Chancery Court proceedings statewide. In this role as a litigation manager, the Deputy General Counsel will advise and assist agency attorneys in the following types of proceedings: Shelter hearings Adjudication Hearings Disposition Hearings Permanency Reviews Termination of Parental Rights proceedings Related Chancery Court proceedings (adoptions, civil commitments, minor settlements, guardianship/conservatorship proceedings, etc.) The Deputy General Counsel will also assist in advising and supervising attorneys in appellate proceedings related to MDCPS’s representation in Youth Court/Chancery Court proceedings under the supervision of General Counsel. On occasion, the Deputy General Counsel may also assist the General Counsel with other duties as assigned, including representing the agency at meetings involving child welfare system partners What you’ll need to be Successful Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and related program software, demonstrate integrity, excellent verbal and written communication skills, ability to adapt quickly, courteous, ability to maintain confidentiality. Preferred Qualifications Requires membership in the Mississippi State Bar Association.

Agency preferred qualifications:

10 years’ experience in Youth Court/Chancery Court and demonstrated interest in child welfare law preferred. Jackson Metro residency preferred but not required. Some travel required. Jackson Metro residency preferred but not required.
