Flat Rated The Office of the Parent Defender (OPD) was created to provide and promote high-quality legal representation for parents with an abuse/neglect/dependency or termination of parental rights (AND/TPR) case at the trial or appellate level. The Office of the Parent Defender seeks a qualified attorney to assist attorneys practicing at the trial level in child welfare matters and to represent indigent parents in appeals of abuse/neglect/dependency and termination of parental rights cases. The applicant will work with the Parent Defender to support trial and appellate counsel through developing resource materials, providing training and individual case consultations. This is an in-person position working in the Durham office that requires occasional travel. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities /

Competencies Knowledge of:

North Carolina law and procedure governing Chapter 7B (Subchapter 1); Federal constitutional law; and North Carolina common law and constitutional law.

Skills and Abilities:

The person in this position should be able to work efficiently under time pressure and prioritize multiple tasks and projects. The person should have excellent writing and communication skills. The person in this position must be able to analyze facts, identify the relevant law, and apply it to those facts; conduct thorough legal research efficiently; and express complex legal concepts and related facts in a clear, concise, and persuasive manner. Minimum Education and Experience Requirements Juris Doctor degree from an ABA accredited law school and an active license to practice law in North Carolina.

Management Preferences:
