JOB SUMMARY
The Underwriting Counsel serves as a key legal advisor to direct operations, agents, national commercial services (NCS), and clients, providing expert guidance on complex matters related to title, escrow, claims, and business. This role requires a strategic legal mindset combined with strong business acumen, with a primary focus on deal-making and business development. The ideal candidate excels in a fast-paced, client-facing environment and plays a central role in driving new opportunities while delivering exceptional service and legal expertise within our office.
SUMMARY OF ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Customer Engagement & Legal Support- Deliver responsive, solution-oriented feedback to attorney clients. Handle inquiries submitted to Underwriting Express and provide practical, business-savvy counsel. Develop and present legal education materials for CLEs, the company website, and client resources. Support claims investigations and resolve issues collaboratively with clients and colleagues. Actively engage with customer associations such as the NC Bar Association (including the Real Property Section), North Carolina Land Title Association (NCLTA), Real Estate Lawyers of North Carolina (RELANC), NC State Bar, and local bar associations. Serve as a thought leader and presenter at industry seminars and events. Business Development & Marketing- Cultivate and expand relationships with law firms, commercial developers, lenders, and approved attorneys. Actively engage in business development activities, including client meetings, office visits, marketing events, bar and industry conferences, and educational sessions. Collaborate with the sales team to develop compelling marketing strategies and client outreach initiatives. Play a crucial role in enhancing the company’s presence and reputation in the North Carolina legal, residential and commercial real estate markets. Underwriting & Legislative Insight- Provide underwriting support and risk analysis for transactions. Collaborate with local underwriters to offer timely, clear guidance on legal matters. Stay ahead of evolving North Carolina and federal real estate laws and regulatory developments and communicate their impact internally and externally. Contribute to legislative initiatives and maintain up-to-date underwriting resources and tools. Internal Training & Education–Design and implement training programs and resources for underwriters across local and state operations. Mentor junior team members and cultivate a collaborative learning environment.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Juris Doctor degree and active membership in the North Carolina bar. At least five (5) years of experience as a real estate attorney. Demonstrated expertise in title and commercial real estate law. Proven ability to build client relationships and generate new business. Exceptional interpersonal, analytical, and problem-solving skills. Strong decision-making abilities, effective written and verbal communication, and great attention to detail. Ability to manage multiple priorities in a deadline-driven environment. Proficient in legal research tools and relevant software.
