POSITION SUMMARY
The Legal Advocate provides support, information, and advocacy to survivors of domestic violence involved in the legal system. This includes assistance with protection orders, court accompaniment, navigating the criminal justice process, and connecting survivors with legal resources. The advocate is not a licensed attorney and does not provide legal advice but ensures survivors are informed, supported, and empowered throughout their legal journey.
Key Responsibilities:
Legal Advocacy & Support Assist survivors with filing for temporary restraining/protection orders (TROs) and prepare them for final hearings. Provide court accompaniment for domestic violence hearings, custody proceedings, and other related legal matters. Explain court processes, survivor rights, and what to expect during legal proceedings. Support survivors in documenting abuse and gathering necessary legal paperwork (evidence, police reports, custody forms, etc.). Referrals & Collaboration Connect clients to pro bono attorneys, legal aid organizations, immigration specialists, or other legal resources as appropriate. Collaborate with courts, prosecutors, law enforcement, and legal partners to support survivor safety and access to justice. Coordinate services with internal case managers, counselors, and shelter staff. Education & Outreach Facilitate legal rights education sessions or workshops for survivors. Participate in community outreach to increase awareness of legal options and agency services. Administrative & Reporting Maintain accurate and confidential case documentation in accordance with organizational and grant requirements. Track services and outcomes for reporting to funders and agency leadership. Participate in supervision, team meetings, and legal services trainings.
Qualifications:
Certified in Domestic Violence Response Team training and Confidential Sexual violence Advocacy through SERV Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, Social Work, Legal Studies, or a related field. 1-2 years of experience in advocacy, victim services, legal support, or related work. Strong understanding of domestic violence dynamics and trauma-informed care. Knowledge of civil and criminal legal processes related to domestic violence, including protection orders and custody. Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
Bilingual or multilingual (Spanish, Haitian Creole, etc.) highly desirable. Prior experience working with courts, law enforcement, or legal aid. Experience supporting immigrant, LGBTQ , disabled, or marginalized survivors.
Work Environment:
Office, courtrooms, and off-site partner locations (e.g., police departments, legal clinics). May require occasional evening hours or travel for court accompaniment. High emotional resilience needed to support survivors navigating traumatic legal processes.
