The Consortium for Worker Education (CWE) is a premier nonprofit workforce development organization based in New York City. Our mission is to improve the lives of working New Yorkers through adult education, job training, and employment services. CWE partners with labor unions, community-based organizations, and government agencies to help individuals advance economically and contribute meaningfully to their communities. Overview CWE is seeking an experienced and mission-driven General Counsel to serve as the organization’s chief legal officer. This is a full-time, in-person position located in CWE’s New York City office. The General Counsel will be responsible for managing all legal affairs of the organization, ensuring regulatory compliance, minimizing legal risk, and supporting strategic initiatives. The General Counsel reports directly to the President .

Key Responsibilities:

Serve as principal legal advisor to the President, senior leadership team, and Board of Directors. Review, draft, and negotiate a wide range of contracts and agreements, including funding contracts, leases, MOUs, and vendor agreements. Ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations, including those governing nonprofit organizations and government-funded programs. Provide guidance on labor and employment law matters, including union issues, personnel policies, internal investigations, and dispute resolution. Lead risk management initiatives and help develop internal policies and procedures. Represent CWE in legal and regulatory proceedings or coordinate with external legal counsel as necessary. Monitor and interpret legal and regulatory changes affecting the organization. Support corporate governance, including Board operations, conflict-of-interest compliance, and organizational policies.

Qualifications:

Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school; member in good standing of the New York State Bar. 7-10+ years of legal experience, with at least 3 years advising nonprofit or public-sector organizations. Extensive knowledge of nonprofit law, public funding regulations, contract law, and labor/employment issues. Excellent legal judgment, problem-solving skills, and ability to translate complex legal issues into clear guidance. Strong interpersonal, writing, and verbal communication skills. A demonstrated commitment to social justice, economic equity, and CWE’s mission.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience as in-house counsel at a nonprofit or mission-driven organization. Familiarity with New York City and State contracting requirements. Understanding of the workforce development ecosystem, labor unions, or adult education programming.

$185,000.00 per year
