Hooks Sumter County Human Resources Assistant Administration Building Telephone (803) 774-2824 13 East Canal Street FAX (803) 774-2827 Sumter, SC 29150 The Third Circuit Public Defender’s Office is Presently Seeking an Investigator for Clarendon and Williamsburg Counties Starting Salary $40,000
Examples of Work Performed:
Under general supervision, collects, and prepares case files and evidence for the defense of cases in two County Public Defender offices as assigned. Exercises good customer service techniques, such as listening, effective communications and problem solving. Communicates with a variety of people such as court personnel, law enforcement agencies, suspects, doctors, witnesses, victims, experts, etc.; collects all reports, evidence, etc., to prepare criminal cases for trial. Explains court procedures; arranges pre-trial conferences with defendants, witnesses, law enforcement officers, medical personnel, etc. Notifies bondsmen, defendants, and defense attorneys of trail/plea dates. Verifies transportation for bonded and incarcerated defendants while scheduling mental health evaluations and other mitigation appointments. Visits crime scenes and locates witnesses or defendants, as needed. Files and serves court orders after presenting to the judge for signature; completes subpoenas for pre-trail conferences, trails, etc., prepares necessary paperwork for failure to appear bench warrants when appropriate; frequent same day travel required, performs other duties as required.
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Is knowledgeable in the laws, ordinances, standards and regulations pertaining to the specific duties and responsibilities of the position. Has thorough knowledge of the organization of the department and of related departments and agencies. Has knowledge of principles and practices of proper investigative paralegal techniques. Is able to prepare case files and communicate effectively with other law enforcement agencies, attorneys, general public, etc. Is able to exercise judgment and discretion in interpreting and applying depart/court policies and procedures. Is able to take the initiative to complete the duties of the position without the need of direct supervision. Is able to read and interpret legal documents, law enforcement reports, financial documents, codes of law and related materials pertaining to the responsibilities of the job. Knows how to maintain effective relationships with personnel of other departments, professionals, and members of the public. Has good public relations skills. Has good organizational, technical, and human relations skills. Has thorough knowledge of modern office practices, equipment, and technology. Is able to maintain records accurately and with confidentiality. Is capable of working under stressful conditions.
Minimum Requirements:
A high school diploma and three to five years of experience in the field of law enforcement that would provide knowledge of the laws, rules and regulations applicable to the occupational area. A Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice or a related field may be substituted for the required work experience. Must possess a valid state driver’s license. Law Enforcement certification from the SC Criminal Justice Academy preferred, but not required.
