Paralegal (Heirs Property) 5.0 5.0 out of 5 stars West Palm Beach, FL 33401 The Legal Aid Society of Palm Beach County is a nonprofit charitable law firm dedicated to ensuring equal access to the justice system for the low-income, disadvantaged and traditionally underserved residents of Palm Beach County. The Heirs Property Project increases housing and economic stability for individuals and promotes the well-being and overall health of communities by resolving heirs property legal issues. Through the provision of high quality legal services, the Project obtains clear and marketable title for heirs, which may include filing a probate action or defending a mortgage foreclosure, and provides them with estate planning documents, whereby enabling them to preserve property wealth for future generations.
JOB SUMMARY
The Heirs’ Property Project Paralegal will work closely with program attorneys to support clients dealing with heirs’ property and related legal issues. The paralegal will assist in case development, client communication, legal research, drafting pleadings, coordinating with courts and agencies, and community outreach. The position includes intake, case investigation, and preparation of legal documents under attorney supervision. The paralegal will also help with program outreach and workshops, maintain detailed records in Legal Server, and manage clerical tasks. Work is reviewed regularly by a supervising attorney. The standard schedule is Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., with occasional evening or weekend responsibilities.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Conduct client intake and screenings, including telephone and in-person interviews. Investigate legal matters, compile documentation, and support early resolution of client issues. Draft legal documents including motions, pleadings, retainer agreements, discovery, trial exhibits, and correspondence. Assist with matters involving guardianship, guardianship advocacy, probate, housing, wills, advanced directives, and public benefits (Social Security, Medicaid, Medicare, VA benefits, SNAP). File legal pleadings using the Florida Courts E-Filing Portal. Maintain and update digital case files in the Legal Server database. Support staff attorneys in preparing cases for litigation and coordinating hearings. Participate in outreach efforts, including workshops, presentations, and community events. Create, distribute, and maintain outreach materials and brochures. Track time and activity in accordance with grant requirements and internal procedures. Attend staff meetings and collaborate with internal and external partners. Maintain confidentiality of all client information. Adhere to agency policies, procedures, and professional standards. Display professionalism, reliability, and a client-centered approach.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor’s degree in Public Administration, Legal Studies, or related field required. Paralegal certification or equivalent legal experience (may be substituted on a year-for-year basis). Familiarity with probate, guardianship, public benefits, and real property issues. Strong working knowledge of legal software and tools, including Microsoft Office Suite, Westlaw/Lexis, and electronic court filing systems. Excellent drafting, legal research, and case management skills. Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities. Ability to prioritize tasks, meet deadlines, and manage multiple cases efficiently. Professional demeanor, discretion, and sound judgment. Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team. Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Bilingual (Spanish/English) preferred. Commitment to serving low-income and underserved communities. Must pass a Level 1 background screening and internal conflict check.
SALARY:
Salary range depending on experience. Full benefits package in addition to salary includes: Vacation leave earnings equal 2.4 weeks a year (beginning the first of the month after 30 days of employment) and increases to 3 weeks a year after two years of employment. Sick leave earnings equal 2.4 weeks a year (beginning the first of the month after 30 days of employment). 13-15 paid holidays per year (depending on court schedule). Health, dental and vision insurance (beginning first of the month after 30 days of employment). Employer paid short-term disability/long-term disability and life insurance (beginning first of the month after 30 days of employment). Employer matches up to 3% of 401K plan contribution (eligible after one year of service). Salary paid bi-weekly by direct deposit. Mileage and reimbursements processed weekly.
