The Chemung County/City of Elmira Regional Civil Service Commission Is Hosting the 2025 Deputy Sheriff/Police Officer Open Competitive Civil Service Exam.

There Is No Exam Fee Salary:
Varies by agency. This examination is being held to fill vacancies, as they may occur in the Chemung County Office of the Sheriff, Village of Elmira Heights Police Department, Village of Horseheads Police Department, and the City of Elmira Police Department.
Residency Requirement:
Candidates must have been legal residents of Chemung County or the contiguous counties within New York State of Schuyler, Steuben, Tompkins or Tioga for at least one (1) month immediately preceding the date of the written test. Preference can be given to local residents for placement. Certain jurisdictions required residency.
JOB DESCRIPTION
A.)
Police Officer:
This work consists primarily of routine patrol tasks. The incumbent has personal responsibility in an assigned district during a specific period for the enforcement of all laws and ordinances and protection of lives and property and assists in the investigation of criminal offenses and the apprehension of criminals. Ordinary procedures and special assignments are carried out under immediate supervision of a superior officer, however, there is considerable independent responsibility for the exercise of sound judgment in emergencies. Does related work as required. B.)
Deputy Sheriff:
The work involves responsibility for the protection of lives and property and the enforcement of laws and ordinances within the County. On an assigned shift an incumbent assists in the investigation of offenses and the apprehension of violators, conducting routine patrol operations in accordance with standard departmental operating procedures. The work is performed under the general supervision of a higher ranking officer who gives specific instructions and assistance when special problems arise. Does related work as required.
Special Requirements:
Age 19 to 43. Must be US Citizen. Must Have Driver’s License. Felony Conviction
