POSITION SUMMARY
The Patrol Officer is responsible for protection of life and property, prevention of crimes,
apprehension of criminals and the general enforcement of laws and ordinances. Duties
normally consist of routine patrol, preliminary investigation and traffic regulation. To provide
a safe environment for citizens and visitors and to answer calls for service ranging from
friendly assists to highly stressful and dangerous incidents:
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Create and maintain a feeling of security in the community.
- Identify criminal offenders and criminal activity and, where appropriate, to apprehend offenders and participate in subsequent court proceedings.
- Reduce the opportunities for the commission of some crimes through preventive patrol and other measures.
- Aid individuals who are in danger of physical harm.
- Protect constitutional guarantees.
- Facilitate the movement of people and vehicles.
- Assist those who cannot care for themselves.
- Resolve conflict.
- Identify situations that are potentially serious law enforcement or governmental problems.
- Promote and preserve civil order.
- Provide other services on an emergency basis.
- Patrol assigned area in a one- or two-person radio car, or on foot/bicycle, for general purposes of crime prevention and enforcement; including, apprehending persons violating
the law or wanted by the police; public assembly checks; building security checks;
interrogation of suspicious adults and juveniles; issuing traffic citations; locating fires;
reporting street lights and traffic signals out of order; street hazards and other safety
problems; checks of schools, parks, and playgrounds.
- Respond to situations brought to the attention of the office while in the course of routine
patrol or assigned by radio; render first aid to persons who are seriously ill or injured;
assist invalids, senile, and lost persons, or other persons needing police assistance. - Answer questions asked by the general public, counsel juveniles and adults when
necessary and refer them to persons or agencies where they can obtain further assistance. - Preserve the peace at public gatherings, neighborhood disputes, and family fights.
- Complete detailed crime reports on all reported public offenses, crimes and vehicle accidents, including arrest reports and investigation reports as appropriate; taking
statements from witnesses, suspects, and complainants at the scene, ensure all
appropriate departments and outside agencies are involved/informed when necessary.

- Complete brief complaint reports on assignments where no offense has occurred, or
further police action is not required. - Submit, through command channels, a detailed report when an officer is involved in a
situation where there is unfavorable public reactions, or charges are made against a police
officer. - Serve or deliver warrants, summonses, subpoenas, and other official papers promptly and
accurately when directed by a superior officer. - Guard prisoners who are receiving treatment at a hospital.
- Leave assigned area to assist fellow officers on calls of a serious or dangerous nature.
- Confer with court prosecutors and testify in court.
- Ensure assigned motor vehicle is well maintained mechanically and that it is kept clean both inside and out.

SKILLS/EXPERIENCE/TRAINING REQUIRED
- Graduation from high school or equivalent required, with an accredited two-year college
or university with a degree in criminal justice, law enforcement, public administration, or
a closely related field preferred. - Must have graduated from the Maine Criminal Justice Academy “Basic School”.
- Must possess a valid motor vehicle operator’s license as required by the State of Maine.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, Town officials, and the general public.
- Ability to actively listen and be sensitive to others concerns, with or without being directly involved.
- Must exclude personal bias from work performance, exercise tact and diplomacy, and strive to promote and maintain a cooperative workplace atmosphere.
- Extensive knowledge of the principles, standards, and practices of modern policing.
- Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices, and procedures as applied to patrol, traffic control, and criminal investigations, and crime prevention.
- Knowledge of first aid principles, practices, and techniques.
- Advanced operation, use and care of police equipment and tools, including firearms.
- Advanced knowledge of federal, state, county and town ordinances related to public safety.
- Ability to interact effectively with youth and adults from diverse social and economic backgrounds.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to analyze complex issues and take appropriate action.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills. Must have the ability to communicate and facilitate effectively with diverse audiences.
- Must have the ability to maintain professional composure and take reasonable action when confronted with difficult situations.

- Ability to maintain highly confidential/sensitive information and work independently
while exercising good judgement and initiative. - Ability to learn the Town geography, demographics, and population pattern, including the
location of buildings and areas requiring various police services.

and bodily fluids such as blood. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet.
