Description General Description:
This is a professional position. The incumbent will make bail recommendations to the local courts using risk assessment tools, criminal records, and interviews of pretrial detainees held at the Pamunkey Regional Jail. The incumbent will also supervise criminal defendants released on bond to ensure compliance with the court’s orders.
Organization:
The Pre-Trial Investigator reports to the Director of Community Corrections and supervises no staff.
Essential Functions:
Conduct interviews and investigations on defendants to obtain background information and make bail recommendations for court arraignment hearings.
Coordinate and monitor court ordered treatment services, SCRAM, GPS, and special conditions set by the court.
Serve as court liaison for arraignment dockets.
Monitor pending court cases/dispositions via VCIN and Supreme Court database. Supervise defendant’s conditions of release and seek a capias or submit violations on non-compliant behavior. Maintain case management records on all defendants.
Conduct and observe defendant drug testing and breathalyzer testing.
Prepare court reports, violation reports, status letters and testify in court as needed. Perform related work as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Must have knowledge of the criminal justice system, community corrections, judicial systems and procedures. Excellent oral and written communication skills to compile facts and information into concise court reports. Ability to maintain confidentiality and case management. Must be computer literate.
Education, Experience and Training:
Requires Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, Psychology, Sociology, or related field, and a minimum of two years related experience. – OR – Any equivalent combination of education, experience and/or training sufficient to demonstrate the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary.
