QualificationsEducation:

Graduation from an accredited college or university witha bachelors degree.

Substitution of Experience for

Education:

Full-time related professional experience may be substituted forthe bachelors degree on a year-for-year basis. This includes lawenforcement experience.

Necessary Special Qualifications:

Applicantsfor this class must: Be willing to and able to qualify with, carry, and use assignedweapons; Be at least eighteen (18) years of age on the date ofapplication; Be a citizen of the United States; Have a good moral character, as determined byinvestigation; Complete a criminal history disclosure form in a mannerapproved by the appointing authority; Agree to release all records involving their criminal historyto the appointing authority; Supply a fingerprint sample in a manner prescribed by the TBIfor a fingerprint based criminal history records check; Have no conviction for a felony or any domestic assaultconvictions or have been discharged under any other than honorableconditions from any branch of the United States armed forces; Pass a physical examination administered by a licensedphysician that is consistent with the Americans with DisabilitiesAct and that relates to the essential functions of theposition; Pass a psychological evaluation administered by a licensedmental health professional that is consistent with the Americanswith Disabilities Act and that relates to the essential functionsof the position; Submit to and pass a pre-employment screening test for use ofillegal drugs; Possess a valid motor vehicle operators license at the time ofappointment; Upon appointment, successfully complete all additionalprescribed course of instruction at the Tennessee CorrectionAcademy and any and all on-line training.

Overview Summary:

Undergeneral supervision is responsible for entry-level probation andparole work of average difficulty, and performs related work asrequired.

Distinguishing Features:

An employee in this classperforms on a full-time basis a set of trainee duties in the fieldof Probation and Parole, learning to plan and/or implement servicesfor in Probation and Parole for the State of Tennessee. Supervisionis initially close, but as an incumbent learns procedures andpractices, supervision becomes more general. The employee will beeligible for preferred status after completing a probationaryperiod.

Responsibilities Processing Information:

Prepares and maintains offenders records and reports; Identifies criminal activities and background information inreports or standard forms which answer special requests by theparole board; Prepares narrative reports of the investigation process; Total caseload activities when preparing monthlyreports.

Evaluating Information to Determine Compliance with

Standards:

Utilizes compliance reports on a monthly basis to determine theofficers work is in compliance with standards required by policyand procedures. Monitors the offenders under their supervision to ensurecompliance with release requirements set for the offenders bypolicy and procedures.

Getting Information:

Interviews probationers and parolees regularly to evaluatetheir progress in accomplishing goals and maintaining the termsspecified in their probation contracts and rehabilitationplans. Searches on state, local, and federal databases for incidentsand additional information related to their offenders. Monitors and reviews e-mails related to the status of theiroffenders. Conducts pre-hearing and pre-release investigations andtestifies in court regarding the offenders backgrounds andrecommended sentences and sentencing conditions as required bypolicy. Conducts searches of offender residences, vehicles and personas required by policy.

Establishing and Maintaining InterpersonalRelationships:

Acts as liaison with judges, court personnel, law enforcementand other agencies concerned with the probation/parole program andwho may have an effect upon the success of agency goals. Interacts with each offender in a positive and respectfulmanner always dealing with hostile attitudes and the offender in acontrolled and calming manner. Interacts in a positive manner with other staff members andother fellow employees to foster and maintain a harmonious workingenvironment.

Making Decisions and Solving Problems:

Requests arrest warrants for non-compliance by the offenders asrequired by policy and procedures. Utilizes compiled offender information in order to determineproper steps for treatment.

Monitor Processes, Materials, orSurroundings:

Supervises people on community-based sentences, such aselectronically monitored home detention, and provide fieldsupervision of probationers by conducting curfew checks or visitsto home, work, or school. Administers drug and alcohol tests, including random drugscreens of offenders, to verify compliance with substance abusetreatment programs. Attends and monitors court hearings of offenders. Receives and responds to correspondence from other statesrelated to offenders supervision. Receives and responds to GPS alerts regarding offenders andprocesses notifications. Recommends remedial action or initiates court action inresponse to noncompliance with terms of probation or parole.

Develops a transitional accountability plan informing offendersof the requirements of conditional release, such as office visits,restitution payments, or educational and employmentstipulations. Develops appropriate sanctions for offender compliance withtheir conditions of release.

Writes reports describing offenders progress. Identifyingoffender status and updating personal information and employerinformation. Coordinates clinical assessments for offenders.
