Corporate Safety Officer East Carolina Mechanical, LLC Jacksonville, NC 28540

Job Purpose:

East Carolina Mechanical, LLC ( henceforth referred to as ECM) is a plumbing and mechanical contractor that bids and performs federally and civilian contracted work for the military and both the private and public sectors. ECM’s four Core Principles are People, Leadership, Teamwork, and Solutions. This position strategically contributes to all four principles. The Safety Officer’s goal is to identify, eliminate, and minimize all potential safety hazards that could lead to an accident and injury through education and partnerships with ECM employees. The Safety Officer is a salary-paid (exempt) position who carries out all the functions and features of the job with organization and compliance as the guide. This position requires managerial construction experience, a thorough knowledge of construction safety requirements, motivational leadership skills, and strong oration abilities. The Safety Officer works largely at an independent pace, requiring very little oversight, but represents ECM’s goals & standards. This position directly reports to the Operations Manager, although specific compliance and paperwork features of the job will require oversight from the HR Manager.

Job Duties:

Carry out all duties, whether explicit or implicit, with the spirit of ECM, holding in high esteem the reputation of ECM in the construction community. Devise and execute physical and environmental safety protocols to protect both the employee and their workplace; support a safe working environment. Support continuous improvements in safety awareness and mindset, inspiring others to take action, develop and sustain a safety culture not simply based on regulatory codes and consequences, but based on shared values. Goes beyond enforcing safety rules and codes to explain the way to enhance the relationship between the employee and a safe mindset. Establish and maintain all OSHA administrative paperwork, practices, requirements, conduct OSHA training, effectively use all OSHA tools, implement any OSHA programs, and drive compliance and safety upwards. Hazard and risk assessment and analysis, build a solution-driven plan; conduct compliance inspections job site to job site, followed by written documentation on the visit; worksite improvement plans – if necessary. Identifies and prevents injury, conducts incident investigation, prepares written reports; writes corrective action plan. Investigate and report all near misses and accidents to the proper authorities. Identify a root cause, conduct necessary education of employees, provide supportive measures for the Superintendent and PM assigned to the job, write a corrective action plan, if deemed necessary, and provide detailed follow-up to the job site. Translate technical terms and requirements for non-safety personnel. Assist with all safety paperwork, documentation, and filings. Support ECM’s goals for the workplace by reviewing all corporate safety policies at least annually, making necessary legal changes when laws have changed, and offering suggestions for better strategy and implementation. Keeps abreast of weather hazards and Marine Corps base closings; maintains updates on all safety compliance requirements, codes, and laws, stays updated on OSHA’s website featured articles and publications by being a recipient of their newsletter. Administer safety orientation training for all new hires, re-certify all required ECM personnel; conduct all needed safety trainings for ECM, as qualified to do, and maintain records and certifications for all ECM personnel; ensure safety orientation is given on each job site. Provides safety updates to Project Managers, HR, and the Operations Manager. Provide regular feedback to Superintendents regarding job site safety compliance. Engage in mentoring and coaching strategies with field employees who are using less-than-safe working habits and recognize the field employees complying with regulatory compliance. Collaborate with the GC, subcontractors, and any government officials on site; be ECM’s safety authority and liaison; resident expert on safety for all Superintendents and Project Managers. Reviews all Activity Hazard Analysis (AHA) and Accident Prevention Plans (APP) for every job. Maintain PPE inventory; ensure ECM employees adhere to PPE requirements and the safety policies; enforce all federal, state, local, GC, and ECM safety standards.
