Environmental Health Supervisor (Children’s Environmental Health Program) Union County – 3.5 Monroe, NC Job Details Full-time $92,103.87 – $138,155.80 a year 1 day ago Qualifications Mid-level 4 years Full Job Description JOB The Environmental Health Supervisor, under limited supervision, coordinates and oversees the activities of Environmental Health Specialists conducting field work in the Food, Lodging and Institutions, Children’s Environmental Health or On-site Water Protection Program within the Environmental Health Division. Provides responsible and professional supervisory and specialized work in the enforcement of North Carolina Public Health Laws and Rules and County Ordinances. Work encompasses the administration of program-specific environmental health activities. Performs administrative duties related to communicating public health rule interpretations and changes to citizens, facility owners, operators and contractors, Employee must apply discretion and independent judgment in the interpretation of pertinent rules and regulations and while conducting complex inspections. Employee must use considerable tact and courtesy in frequent contact with the general public, industry professionals and county, municipal, state, and federal officials. Reports to Environmental Health Director.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES

Supervises Environmental Health Specialists and Program Specialists and prioritizes and assigns work. Develops short- and long-term objectives and goals within assigned programs; implements upon approval.

Monitors staff scheduling and time management to ensure efficiency and effectiveness.

Investigates communicable illnesses and serves on the Union County Public Health Epi Team.

Assists Environmental Health Director with the development and implementation of Environmental Health policies and procedures.

Manages quality assurance and improvement activities within program. Monitors processes, workflow and data collection within program.

Supervises and guides staff to ensure that state, local, and federal environmental health laws and regulations are understood and applied consistently. Ensures Environmental Health Specialists follow policies and procedures and receive and maintain required training.

Evaluates performance of staff supervised and completes performance appraisals; counsels staff regarding performance deficiencies; reviews grievances and recommends disciplinary action to Environmental Health Director.

Coordinates staff training within program. Interfaces with Regional Environmental Health Specialist to attain authorizations.

Investigates food or waterborne illness outbreaks and complaint investigations. Documents results using software management system and provides follow-up to achieve legal compliance.

Participates in emergency preparedness and response activities in the event of a natural disaster, disease outbreak and other threats to the health of the public. These activities may require supplemental safety and readiness training and afterhours and weekend work. Maintains program compliance with inspection frequency, reporting requirements, Public Health Accreditation and quality objectives set by Division. Procures field staff supplies and equipment. Maintains inventory and logs.

Makes formal presentations concerning environmental health issues to various civic groups and organizations.

Performs the duties of Environmental Health Program Specialists and Environmental Health Specialists as necessary.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

POSITION SPECIFIC FUNCTIONS

Children’s Environmental Health ProgramOversees plan review, permitting/licensing approvals and inspections or a variety of childcare and adult day service facilities, camps, public and private schools, and cafeterias. Coordinates child lead poisoning prevention program activities.

Coordinates the Environmental Health Division’s educational and outreach efforts. Develops resources and campaigns to educate the public and industry on Environmental Health. Builds strategic partnerships with stakeholders to enhance public protection.

Maintains proficiency in food science and microbiology as it relates to foodborne, waterborne and communicable illness transmission, with emphasis on children’s health and safety.

Remains current on known sources of child lead poisoning and prevention methods.

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION PHYSICAL

DEMANDSMust be physically able to operate a motor vehicle. Must be physically able to operate a vehicle, able to exert up to 30 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Significant degree of walking, standing, and bending required. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for Sedentary Work. Light Work usually requires walking or standing to a significant degree. However, if the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for Sedentary Work and the worker sits some of the time, the job is rated for Light Work.
