The Director of Patient Safety and Quality, Inpatient,provides leadership, direction and administration to ensureconsistency, follow through and successful completion ofestablished strategic objectives. Focuses on developingcross-functional and system-wide relationships beyond theDepartment of Patient Safety and Quality to facilitate highlymultidisciplinary and complex collaborations. Quality goals acrossthe assigned focused areas are monitored, barriers eliminated andare successfully achieved. Facilitates the transformation ofinpatient operations by instituting and nurturing an outstandingmodel for collaboration and teamwork, safety, and high quality,reliable outcomes. Responsibilities A day in the life of a Directorof Patient Safety and Quality, Inpatient at Hackensack MeridianHealth includes:

  • Partners with VP of Patient Safety and HighReliability and other department leaders to provide vision,leadership, structure and direction for continued development ofthe Department of Patient Safety and Quality.
  • Executes theDepartment of Patient Safety and Quality strategic plan across thenetwork including planning and directing safety and quality.
  • Promotes a culture of patient safety and leads systemicimplementation of an effective patient safety and qualityimprovement program across all inpatient hospital settings.
  • Facilitates physician and nurse leaders, and staff toward processand system improvements that will support the reduction ofpreventable healthcare errors and other factors that contribute tounintended adverse events and/or quality outcomes.
  • Leads theprioritization and action planning process that focuses oneliminating health disparities.
  • Collaborates with Data Analyticsand Business Intelligence leadership collecting relevant data forquality improvement and research projects.
  • Attends andfacilitates relevant Hackensack Meridian Health (HMH) meetings forquality and safety.
  • Focuses on key areas including but notlimited to women/maternal health, perinatal/infant and socialdeterminants of health; in concert with OB leaders across HMH,serves as the women/maternal health, perinatal/infant healthPatient Safety and Quality content expert by designing, planning,implementing and coordinating safety, quality and performanceimprovement activities for all birthing hospitals (and outpatientfacilities).
  • Oversees and facilitates Root Case Analysis (RCA)and Apparent Cause Analysis (ACA) process and evaluations.
  • Maintains up to date knowledge for the practice of patient safety,performance improvement, and high reliability: Integratesprinciples using the theories, methods, tools and principles ofpatient safety, performance improvement, and high reliability,including statistical data collection and analysis.
  • Stays abreastof and communicates all regulatory compliance changes andincorporates findings into all resident/patient safety and qualityimprovement activities accordingly.
  • Fosters continuousorganizational learning and scaling best practices across thenetwork and between community partners through sharing informationand lessons learned electronically, via workshops, tool kits etc.
  • Develops and improves meaningful patient outcome metrics throughcollaboration with front-line teams, leadership and the SteeringCommittee. Ensures the implementation of best evidence-basedpractices.
  • Promotes external alliances by identifying andbuilding relationships with strategic institutional partners,leveraging existing and building new alliances with community-basedhealth organizations, and developing and maintaining strongrelationships with local government agencies.
  • Strategizes withleaders to lobby policymakers, track legislative and regulatorypriorities, produce advocacy materials, and drive meaningful changefor better outcomes.
  • Participates in physician recruitment andphysician practice contracts focusing on improved maternal – fetalhealth in mind.
  • Other duties and/or projects as assigned.
  • Adheres to HMH Organizational competencies and standards ofbehavior.
Qualifications Education, Knowledge, Skills and AbilitiesRequired:
  • Masters Degree in Nursing, Health Care Administration,Public Health, or other advanced health related degree.
  • Minimumof 7 years of clinical experience in an acute care hospital orrelevant Health Care experience.
  • Experience with NDNQI & MagnetAccreditation.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in patient safetyand quality.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficient computer skills that include but are not limited toMicrosoft Office and/or Google Suite platforms.
Education,Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:
  • PerformanceImprovement expertise.
  • High Reliability Organizations (HRO)experience.
  • Mastery of performance improvement methodologies.
  • Highly collaborative leader.
Licenses and Certifications Required:
  • Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality or CertifiedHealthcare Quality Management or Quality Management Certification,or other related National Quality certification.
  • Attainment ofCertified Professional Patient Safety (CPPS) within one year ofhire.
