Job Title:
Safety Manager Summary/Objective:

The Safety Manager is a full-time position responsible for the ongoing development, implementation, integrity, and effectiveness of safety, health, and environmental functions. This position will work closely with management and employees to provide a safe working environment and to develop a culture committed to injury-free and environmentally conscious performance. Must be a strong hands-on leader and motivator capable of dealing with all levels of management, employees, site personnel, subs and suppliers.

Essential Functions:

Provide a workplace culture committed to accident and injury-free performance. “All accidents are preventable.” Provide direction and oversight to achieve a culture in which property damage incidents and near misses are viewed as unacceptable and as serious pre-cursors to injury incidents. Monitor the safety and regulatory compliance of our work activities and facilities, and identify opportunities for improvement. Facilitate and lead effective safety committees and employee safety incentive programs. Ensure operational, training, policy/program, and recordkeeping compliance with OSHA and MSHA regulations. Work with our Corporate Shop facility to ensure commercial motor vehicle operations are conducted in full compliance with

US DOT FMCSA

regulations. Develop, implement, and maintain effective written safety plans and safety orientation programs. Participate in construction project pre-planning to ensure potential safety issues such as fall protection, confined space entry, silica-containing dust, etc. are identified and plans are developed to mitigate potential hazards. Develop and present regular, dynamic, and valuable employee safety training. This includes scheduling, coordinating locations, providing proper materials, developing, and maintaining proper records of training, ensure that all required training is regularly completed, documented, tracked, and provide pro-active training to address trends and incident prevention strategies. Regularly travel to construction sites, shops, plants, and work areas to provide safety resources, training, and assistance. Develop, maintain, and present various management measurement indicators. Responsible for maintaining and enhancing company’s vision, values and objectives. Interact with customers, suppliers, contractors, and subcontractors to establish and continuously improve effective safety partnerships and to identify and establish best practices. Actively participate with trade organizations such as the New York State Association of General Contractors (AGC), and other trade groups to identify industry safety leadership and best practices. Oversee and manage all insurance claims including worker’s compensation. Effectively complete/compile proper prequalification safety documentation for various safety vetting programs. Timely file, manage and track all claims and status updates and report to upper management. Maintain Approved Company Drivers list Attend and participate in LCW’s Captive insurance group meetings and workshops All other duties as assigned

Position Requirements:

Ability to effectively participate and lead as a member of LCW’s Management Team. Regularly travel to and tour various company work locations. Participate in ongoing education in safety and environmental issues as well as personal development, computer software and systems, etc. Maintain confidentiality in dealing with employee accidents, controlled substance testing, workers compensation claims, etc. according to applicable lays, e.g. HIPPA Be seen as an advocate for safety, not a “safety cop”. Committed to the LCW Core Safety Values, leading by example, and exemplifying these values within written and verbal communications, conduct, and actions. Communicate effectively with employees at all levels of the organization. Set and achieve goals with minimum supervision. Work closely with jobsite and management personnel to address their needs. Work effectively with corporate Risk Management and Legal staff. Strong personality and ability to adapt to situations as required Excellent organizational, time management, and communication skills. Maintain a clean/safe driving record. Conduct weekly sites or facility visits/inspections, and report back to upper management on findings/trends. Communicate timely/effectively with HR and managers for employee tracking.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to travel via ground, and air. Ability to conduct repetitive motions in an office environment such as prolonged periods of sitting, typing, operating on a computer, etc. and/or prolonged periods of standing, bending, walking etc. outside under all weather conditions. Ability to climb ladders, stairs, and slopes. The ability to bend, walk, stand, kneel, hear, see, and speak as necessary in various terrains where the job is located. Be mobile around excavated work areas and equipment. Vision must be sufficient for driving and for conducting safety audits and inspections. Physically able to perform assigned tasks. Must be able to lift 50 – 75 pounds at a time.

Environmental Conditions:

Exposure to outdoor conditions, including inclement weather, when conducting site visits/audits/training, etc. Exposure to general office conditions while conducting office duties. Exposure to dust/fumes/mist, grinding particles, smoke, and particulates consistent with earth moving, asphalt paving, welding, grinding, and heavy construction/industrial work. Education /

Experience Requirements:

An undergraduate degree in Occupational Safety & Health, Engineering, Industrial Technology, or a related discipline is preferable. A minimum of OSHA 30 certification is required. A minimum of 10 years of related alternate work experience may be considered. Road & bridge building/excavation/civil construction industry experience preferred. Knowledge of insurances, claims, and legal proceedings preferred.

Preferred Requirements:

This job operates in and out of the office. Most frequently, the job will be outdoors in all weather conditions and will require frequent travel to job locations.

Pay Range:

$65,000 – $85,000 annually depending on experience level. The above statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification.
