Facilities Safety Officer TN School for the Blind 115 Stewarts Ferry Pike, Nashville, TN 37214

General Description:

The role of the Facilities Safety Officer is responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing safety protocols and procedures to ensure a secure environment for students, staff, and visitors within the school district. This role involves collaboration with local law enforcement, emergency services, school administration, and the community to create a comprehensive approach to school safety.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Develop and maintain emergency preparedness plans, policies, and procedures tailored to the specific needs of the school environment.
  • Conduct risk assessments and safety audits to identify vulnerabilities and recommend improvements.
  • Coordinate safety drills (fire, lockdown, evacuation) and ensure that staff and students are trained and familiar with emergency protocols.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with local law enforcement, fire departments, and emergency management agencies.
  • Act as the primary liaison between the school district and external safety organizations, agencies, and community stakeholders.
  • Facilitate communication with parents, guardians, and the community regarding safety initiatives and emergency information.
  • Provide safety and security training to school staff, students, and parents on issues such as conflict resolution, emergency response, and personal safety.
  • Organize and conduct workshops or presentations to raise awareness about safety issues and best practices.
  • Monitor compliance with local, state, and federal safety regulations and standards, ensuring the school district meets all legal obligations.
  • Maintain up-to-date records related to safety incidents, training programs, and emergency plan effectiveness, preparing reports for school administration and the TN Department of Education as needed.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of safety programs and procedures and recommend necessary changes or improvements.
  • Develop and implement crisis management strategies and coordinate response efforts during safety incidents.
  • Serve as a key member of the crisis response team, actively participating in incident assessment and recovery efforts.
  • Collaborate with administrators, counselors, social workers, school psychologists, and other professionals to address the behavioral and mental health needs of students as part of the overall safety plan.
  • Promote a positive school climate that enhances safety and well-being. Other Functions
  • The role may require working extended hours, including evenings and weekends, during emergencies or special events.
  • Occasional travel may be required for training or conferences.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements:

Minimum Qualification

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university required.
  • Certification in emergency management or safety (such as Certified Emergency Manager, FEMA certifications) is preferred.
  • Proven experience as a safety officer; in depth knowledge of policies (e.g. school safety/FEMA/OSHA) and procedures is required.
  • Knowledge of local, state, and federal regulations related to school safety and security
  • Knowledge of potentially hazardous materials or practices; experience in writing reports and policies for health and safety.
  • Familiarity with conducting data analysis and reporting statistics
  • Proficient in MS Office.
  • Working knowledge of safety management information systems is a plus.
  • Outstanding organizational skills; diligent with great attention to detail.

KNOWLEDGE

of Knowledge of local, state, and federal laws regarding school safety and security. Understanding emergency response protocols and crisis management strategies. Familiarity with emergency preparedness plans, crisis management, and disaster response protocols. Knowledge of how to conduct risk assessments and implement strategies to minimize potential hazards. Awareness of best practices in developing school safety policies and procedures. Knowledge of surveillance systems, access control systems, and other technology used in maintaining school security. SKILLS a strong verbal and written communication skills for interacting with students, staff, parents, and emergency personnel. Ability to mediate conflicts and de-escalate potentially volatile situations. Skills in developing and delivering training programs on safety and emergency procedures for staff and students. Strong analytical skills to assess situations quickly and develop effective solutions. Ability to manage multiple priorities, maintain records, and oversee the implementation of safety policies. Skills in working collaboratively with various stakeholders, including school administration, law enforcement, and community organizations. ABILITY to evaluate safety programs and protocols continuously and make recommendations for improvements. The ability to lead and motivate teams, especially during emergency situations, fosters a culture of safety within the school environment. Ability to remain flexible and adapt to shifting circumstances or emergency situations effectively. Vigilance in monitoring safety reports, incident documentation, and compliance checklists. An understanding of the emotional and physical needs of students and staff, especially in situations involving trauma or crisis. Maintaining a level of physical fitness appropriate for responding to emergencies that may require physical intervention.

Additional Information:

Selected applicants must verify experience/highest degree held. Direct deposit of paycheck on a 12-month schedule is required. TSB is a non-smoking facility in its entirety. The selected applicant must comply with the State of Tennessee Employee Drug-Free Workplace Policy, and other policies.
