Specialist II – Trails Orange Beach, City of (AL) Orange Beach, AL 36561

JOB Job Summary:

The Specialist II is responsible for carrying out the same Specialist-I tasks associated with the maintenance of the Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail and other related properties. In addition, crew leaders (Specialist II’s) will assist with the planning, coordination, implementation and operation of Coastal Resources programs as assigned by the coordinator. Crew leaders will serve as working field supervisors and the first point of decision making in the field. Work includes planning, training, scheduling, record keeping, financial reporting, removal of marine debris and trash; vehicle/equipment operation and maintenance; materials handling and recycling; operation of machinery and various equipment; light construction and facility maintenance; other duties as assigned.

Supervisory responsibilitiesSpecialist I’s, volunteers and/or work release trustee labor.

Essential functions: Mow, trim branches, weed eat, and blow leaves along the Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry trail and other related properties.

Completes required reports and maintains records, such as progress & accident reports, maintenance logs.

Serves as an educational ambassador for the Coastal Resources programs. May deliver presentations or attend public events.

Maintains inventory of related equipment and supplies.

Interacts with the public, trail goers, and city vendors answering questions and providing excellent customer service.

Performs trail grooming and related tasks as needed.

Assists with wildlife incidents as needed.

Performs basic custodial, maintenance and light construction tasks.

Removes debris, abandoned equipment and other items from trails.

Operates equipment and machinery necessary for trail maintenance. Serves as the field supervisor for Specialist I staff on duty that day.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND

ABILITIESReading skills to understand laws, regulations, and policies pertaining to the operation of the department and facilities.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinates, supervisors, and general public.

Verbal skills to communicate effectively with staff, supervisors and the general public.

Math skills to perform basic math to maintain financial and activity records.

Computer skills to prepare reports, complete schedules and payroll.

Knowledge of local trails, waterways, roadways and beaches.

Ability to safely and effectively operate a motor vehicle and trailer, including launching and loading a vessel at various boat launching facilities.

Ability to safely and effectively operate a 4×4 motor vehicle in an off-road environment in proximity to people and obstacles.

Ability to operate an ATV or UTV safely.

Ability to operate common hand tools, power tools and small equipment safely. Knowledge of city and departmental policies, rules, and procedures.

Ability to exercise good judgment in making decisions in accordance with established policies.

Ability to safely and effectively operate lawn maintenance equipment and various heavy equipment. Ability to operate a forklift and pass forklift operator course.

Ability to resolve conflicts and deal with issues presented by the public and/or other staff.

Qualifications:

Education and experience: Possess a high school diploma or equivalent.

Background in landscape or lawn maintenance preferred. Must possess one year of experience as a Specialist I or equivalent experience.

Current Specialist I’s must be in good standing based on previous performance appraisals.

Licenses and Certifications:

Possess a valid Driver’s LicensePossess and maintain a current Red Cross First Aid/CPR and AED certification (training will be provided).

Additional requirements:

Willing to work, overtime, weekends and other non-standard hours.

Work environment includes potential exposure to hazardous sea life and injured wildlife.
