Position Summary:
The Activities Coordinator in the adult psychiatric unit is responsible for planning, organizing, and facilitating therapeutic and recreational activities designed to promote emotional, social, and cognitive well-being for patients receiving mental health care. The coordinator works closely with clinical staff to support treatment goals and create a structured, engaging environment that encourages participation, builds self-esteem, and reduces stress.
Key Responsibilities:
Develop and lead daily therapeutic group activities, including art, music, games, movement, mindfulness, and psychoeducational sessions tailored to patient needs and acuity levels. Collaborate with nursing, social work, and therapy teams to align programming with individualized treatment plans and unit goals. Encourage patient participation in a non-coercive, trauma-informed manner, adjusting activities for various mental health diagnoses and functioning levels. Provide consistent structure and routine, while remaining flexible and responsive to unit dynamics and patient behavior. Document patient attendance and engagement in group activities in accordance with facility policy. Maintain a safe and therapeutic group environment; monitor for patient triggers, escalating behavior, and decompensation. Prepare activity materials, manage supplies, and ensure cleanliness of activity spaces. Organize special events or themed days to boost morale and support recovery. Support patient reintegration by offering life-skills-based activities when appropriate (e.g., cooking groups, budgeting games, communication skills).
Qualifications:
High school diploma or GED required. Experience in mental health, behavioral health, or a related human services field strongly preferred. Ability to engage individuals experiencing mental health crises with empathy, patience, and professionalism. Strong verbal communication and interpersonal skills. Comfortable working in a fast-paced, unpredictable environment with a multidisciplinary team. CPR certification and crisis management training (e.g., CPI, PMAB, or equivalent) required or must be obtained upon hire. Ability to maintain composure and appropriate boundaries in emotionally charged situations.
Preferred Skills:
Background in art, music, fitness, or mindfulness-based practices. Experience documenting in electronic medical records (EMRs). Knowledge of psychiatric diagnoses and how they impact group participation.
